I have been a avid follower of the Dallas Cowboys drafts since 1975. But this is the first year I have not studied one player and don't care. The reason started with the COVID Yacht draft 2020. Jerry Jones was on that Yacht drafting players and drafted a WR when the Jonesboys defense was putrid. Ceedee Lamb was a value pick but you draft the best available player of need and that need has been defense since the 2009. 2020 they did not trade up for Derrick Brown and drafted a WR having a poor defensive performance in the playoff that saw the Rams run the ball down their throats to a Super Bowl appearance.
It is now 2025 and the Jonesboys defense is as always putrid. All I hear is fans and draft gurus saying they need a RB and a WR. The Heck the do!
The Dallas Cowboys' run defense is generally ranked among the worst in the NFL. Specifically, they are tied for last in the league in yards allowed per carry. They also have the worst expected points added per run on defense, meaning they are particularly susceptible to allowing big plays on the ground.
While a precise ranking can vary depending on the source and date, the Cowboys have consistently struggled against the run. For example, in the 2024 season, they allowed an average of 5.4 yards per carry, which is a very high number. They also allowed a high number of yards rushing per game, with over 200 yards in multiple games. This makes them a team that struggles to stop opposing teams from running the ball effectively.
If you cannot stop the run, you are a loser in the NFL trying to win championships. Jonesboys do not sign any credible defensive player in free agency and they do not draft valuable defensive players (excluding Parson who they waste time not signing). When they draft a defensive player that player comes out of college injured (Lee, Carter, Smith) or the wrong player for the defensive scheme (Taco, Mazi, Hill, etc.). The Cowboys have not had a Pro Bowler at DT since Jason Hatcher.
Football ain't rocket science, you stop the run to rush the passer, you throw the ball to score, and run the ball to win. You are not going to score your way to a championship without a defense give the ball to your offense. Defense wins championships.
So draft your RB, WR, TE, OL, and get ready for another top 15 or top 5 pick for the 2026 draft.
