I have been a avid follower of the Dallas Cowboys drafts since 1975. But this is the first year I have not studied one player and don't care. The reason started with the COVID Yacht draft 2020. Jerry Jones was on that Yacht drafting players and drafted a WR when the Jonesboys defense was putrid. Ceedee Lamb was a value pick but you draft the best available player of need and that need has been defense since the 2009. 2020 they did not trade up for Derrick Brown and drafted a WR having a poor defensive performance in the playoff that saw the Rams run the ball down their throats to a Super Bowl appearance.

It is now 2025 and the Jonesboys defense is as always putrid. All I hear is fans and draft gurus saying they need a RB and a WR. The Heck the do!

The Dallas Cowboys' run defense is generally ranked among the worst in the NFL. Specifically, they are tied for last in the league in yards allowed per carry. They also have the worst expected points added per run on defense, meaning they are particularly susceptible to allowing big plays on the ground.

While a precise ranking can vary depending on the source and date, the Cowboys have consistently struggled against the run. For example, in the 2024 season, they allowed an average of 5.4 yards per carry, which is a very high number. They also allowed a high number of yards rushing per game, with over 200 yards in multiple games. This makes them a team that struggles to stop opposing teams from running the ball effectively.

If you cannot stop the run, you are a loser in the NFL trying to win championships. Jonesboys do not sign any credible defensive player in free agency and they do not draft valuable defensive players (excluding Parson who they waste time not signing). When they draft a defensive player that player comes out of college injured (Lee, Carter, Smith) or the wrong player for the defensive scheme (Taco, Mazi, Hill, etc.). The Cowboys have not had a Pro Bowler at DT since Jason Hatcher.

Football ain't rocket science, you stop the run to rush the passer, you throw the ball to score, and run the ball to win. You are not going to score your way to a championship without a defense give the ball to your offense. Defense wins championships.

So draft your RB, WR, TE, OL, and get ready for another top 15 or top 5 pick for the 2026 draft.

What a miserable offseason, every bit as bad as the last one. You already know you aren't winning jack the upcoming season, and the only thing to do is watch the draft, where we trade down and try to shore up an offense led by Dak, and then hear Jerry and Cap Boy tell us that we are ready to compete for a championship.

They have had some poor drafts, but it's wrong to suggest they all have been. 2022 with Smith, Tolbert, Ferguson & Bland seems to have been a good one. Smith hasn't been quite as good as hoped, but he's a starter and there are other starters/contributors in the mix. Lamb, Diggs & Biadasz were good choices a few years earlier.

I stopped reading after the 1st statement. This is the most exciting time of the year for me. I absolutely love it. I start studying players during the college season. It's awesome.

All we can do is wait and see who and what they draft.

I know they are not going to draft like I think they should,so I just wait and see what
happens.

do they ever draft players you think they should?

That's why some of us have been advocating for drafting at least 2 DT's this week.
That would be incredibly encouraging if they did it, and talk about an immediate impact! Great idea since this is a good draft for DTs and we have some relatively high picks.... DO IT!!!

It's a love hate thing for me. I love the hope, the intriguing ideas and optimism. The hate? The Jones boys and the jibber jabber crap. Jerry especially. He's embarrassing.

do they ever draft players you think they should?
Yes, like Demarco Murray who was a guy that I followed starting in high school. Another was Parsons who was a guy that I saw as a guy who could be a dominant pass rusher with his quickness and speed. Another was Lamb a guy that I thought wouldn't be there.

Sadly…this is perfectly on the money. Great post.

I really don’t even think it’s a sell job. They just don’t know what they are looking at and are in way over their heads. They hire people that tell them what they want to hear.

McClays specific pointing out who is in charge was telling in several ways, and the very root of the problem.

This has been a decent off-season. Just because it is not what a fan wants, makes it a bad off-season.

A lot of things to look forward to, even though they do not seem to be competing for the SB. But we never ever really know.
No one thought they could compete in 1992 either. Said a year or 2 away. Though we now are not in that category. But there are things to look forward to.

Ten bucks says there’s no DT until those throwaway picks on Saturday afternoon….if that.

They think they’ve solved it with a big contract and a first round investment.
UFA Defensive Tackle likely a guy with knees that are shot and back problems.

Kind of odd when your issues started with them drafting an elite WR in 2020. How would they trade up for Derrick Brown? LA and Miami are probably not trading with you that year since they went QB. You likely have to trade up to #4 to go get Brown. Even if Carolina wanted to trade back going from 17 up to 7 requires an insane amount of draft capital typically only done for a QB. You do that trade and you're probably sacrificing next years #1 which was used on a pretty good defender. That's just not realistic. Had Lamb not been fallen you would have ended up with Chaisson as your defensive selection and it would have been a massive bust.

I completely understand the run defense needs to become a priority for this team, but the issue certainly isnt a poor ability to draft. For Cowboy fans this should actually be one of the more exciting times of the year as overall they do it pretty well. The issue for the Cowboy is the complete refusal to utilize the free agency market to supplement the team. The draft can only fix so many issues in one offseason.

It really has been a decent offseason. I think they will hit on some of the free agents they signed and the Milton trade has a lot of upside.

Thank you for your post and the work you put in.

Its so true.

It isn't the ability to draft quality players.

It is the ability to determine the skills that are needed for the overall concept of what they want to do, and build a team that can execute those skills.

Dallas drafts good players, but they don't seem to understand their strengths and weaknesses; and don't seem to develop guys very well.

Al Harris seemed like he developed DB's, but they let him go when the new DC wanted the safeties to man up instead of zone/stop run. I haven't seen a really good developmental position coach, and the Coordinators seem to say this is the way I do it, and you need to do it my way........and that really doesn't seem to match up to the abilities of some of the players. Skills vs style just seldom seem to match up.

IE need a Mike that can stack and shed to stop the run, so Dallas drafts a fast linebacker that can rush the passer or a coverage LB. Need a 1T that demands a double on every play, and Dallas drafts a 290lb quick guy who can rush the passer. The players they draft are quality skilled players, but they don't match up to the skills needed by the players they seem to want to draft. Just my opinion.
