The NFL fines the pranksters Dad and team

Unlike most, I usually agree with you more often than not. But not here. I would be ok with the Falcons fining the coach. They can set any standards they want. But the league fining the team? The kid was an adult.
To me the joke was tasteless but even worse the coach allowed his child to obtain information that wasn’t for his eyes to see. For that alone he needed to be penalized.

the child was an adult by law dude
21 is old enough to take full responsibility for it
blaming his father for this is reaching

Not sure what this has to do with anything? That’s even worse lol. If he was 8 years old
I’d give him the pass. But for his son to be an adult is even more stupid.

I am all for accountability believe me on that but that fine is outrageous.
The guy hit with the fine makes 1.6 million a year. HE is the one that allowed his son to have access to that information.

Do you think he would be more ok with being fired and not being able to make that kind of money?

BINGO!

My son is 20, serving in the military, doesn't cost me a dime now as a parent, and more importantly heeded my advice as a father growing up in not doing anything very stupid (or at worst, don't get caught because ANY teenager is going to do something stupid, even I did). One thing my boy hasn't learned (perhaps he will now after his last break up with his old girlfriend) is that you never marry a woman who is going to cost you an arm an a leg unless you can afford her. Being he's a E3 and into his car, he needs to learn he can't afford certain types of girls right now LOL

That said, the reason why the father is partially to blame is because he trusted his son to use good judgement. The son got the number from his fathers job. Given that the college where this young man attends costs 43K a year and he probably doesn't have a free ride for playing football, I'm just wondering if mommy and daddy will still foot the tuition bill?

“Allowed”? I am sure he had no idea.

I don't disagree with you.

That said, if this we're actually a "kid" under the age of 18, I could see where parents can be held liable in civil court for the actions of their children, although of course not on a prank phone call of all things.

If I were a betting man, I'd be willing to wager that a lot of employee's in pro sports that has access to confidential contact information are going to be getting a memo from "corporate" about securing their information.

That said, why would a defensive coach in the NFL have Sanders personal phone number anyways? Just thinking out loud...

End of the day, big ado about nothing only because the QB in question is newsworthy.

As fans we fall back on the legal system or civil cases in regard to situations like this. That doesn't apply here. Your employer goes by their own rules. You don't have to break the law to be fined or fired by your employer. In a court, the father wouldn't be held accountable for anything. I just think this is an overreach by the NFL. Discipline should be left to the individual team.

There may have been NFL confidential material involved. Hence the NFL action. We don’t know the whole story so premature to make a judgement.

Its reasonable for the league to take some action against a team employee for being careless, from a data access perspective, with a third parties private personal data.

I dont know what the law is in the US, but in Europe the league/team would be fined by the Data Protection Commissioner for this.

Regardless of what was involved, I wasn't making a blanket judgement. I was just giving an opinion on who should handle the punishment. Similar to cases that are either federal or state. I thought this should be team over league.

That's a big fine for a prank call let alone one he didn't make. 1/8 of an annual salary is absurd.

The son should have received an NFL ban. He's an adult.

The issue is that the team is part of a controlling organization that sets forth rules, regulations and punishments.

I think the simple litmus test on who handles what is how much news the subject at hand has generated, and if that news is in a positive or negative light.

The bigger question I would ask If I were the Atlanta Falcons is exactly how much other teams have been fined to prank calls? I would find it hard to believe that all of the other prank calls in the past at least a couple of numbers came from NFL teams.

That said, no one in the past from what I'm aware was stupid enough to video themselves making the prank call that could be associated with a NFL team in the past LOL

Also think that both the Falcons and NFL want this news story put to rest, the fines were a drop in the bucket for both the team and coach, so the Falcons aren't going to make any waves about it.

It really doesn’t matter to me who does the punishing as long as they’re punished. Holding someone accountable for doing something wrong seems like a logical choice.

Goofsmell deserves no cred or trust after his actions over the years.

as far as I am concerned, this is just another PR posing that means that is all the league really cares about.

so much for their claim to want to protect The Shield. they just make themselves look smaller and smaller
