Lets talk Tolbert

I wouldn’t call 49 catches for 610 yards and 7 TDs doing absolutely nothing. However, he’s not a WR2 which why we made a couple of WR trades.
That's where I saw him.
Clearly making a step up to be a productive NFL receiver. Not a #2 yet.

I think at minimum Tolbert is now a competent possession receiver to help convert first downs. That's a good thing.

And he might be more. The arrow was pointing up.

If Tolbert keeps improving like he has been, he should be a very valuable asset to this team. He's still young yet and there's no reason why that wouldn't happen if his development continues.

Exactly what I am thinking - he was „sure-handed“ last season even when he didn’t get a lot of targets and caught the passes he could catch, even in the endzone. That’s a major improvement to the year before and a very valuable trait for a third or fourth passing option, isn’t it?

So I hope he keeps it up and falls into the perfect position for his skillset now that Pickens arrives as a clear number two.

Yeah Tolbert didn’t deserve his own thread. He may not be a 2 but certainly a 3 I’m comfortable with.
If Tolbert is an issue to discuss then we will have a fantastic offense. Think how far we’ve come since the offseason if there’s concern about our #4 WR pulling his weight. Tolbert will be fine in his role. More than likely he will be matched up against LBers or 4th CBs and given his numbers last year when he was a #2, he will will cook this year with CD and Pickens getting all the attention.

I consider Tolbert our #3, not #4. And still fine as the #3.

When we need to convert a 1st down, Tolbert is in there over Turpin.

I thought I was the biggest Tolbert "hater" around. Yes, he's improved every year, but from a very low level his rookie year of not even being able to line up. To me he's soft and not physical. He's not a good blocker, isn't good on contested catches, and even McCarthy had to call him out for not breaking up an INT when Dak took a chance on him one on one siren the field. He also allowed not one but two almost identical fake punts to be completed on him when he was end on the punt return team. I wouldn't play a guy like that on my team.

That said, he's at least an okay #3. If it were me, I'd still give Flournoy and even Brooks a fair chance because RF is at least as gifted physically and Brooks to me shows some aggression and toughness. But the Joneses love their own draft picks, and the higher you're picked the more they automatically love you.

Weird that you think Tolbert is a 2 but Pickens is meh.
Both are #2 but Pickens is basically a jump ball go deep kinda player. Just like Gallup was. Tolbert will work the chains and keep the drives moving. He will work the middle in traffic underneath the LBs running crossing routes. Daks weakness is throwing over the middle in traffic hence why people sour on Tolbert. Daks strength is throw deep down the sidelines because it's less risky. So Pickens fits better for Dak. One reason a don't like Dak is his accuracy working the middle of the field.

Eh,
If you bothered to listen to what Greg Olsen pointed out in several games over the last 2 seasons, McCarthy runs a 2 read and check down offense. In Dallas that 1st 2 reads were Lamb and the TE in over 70% of the pass plays.
Tolbert produced 49 receptions and 610 yards when he was one of the first 2 options in less than 30% of the plays or as the check down and with the loli pop ginger as the QB for much of the season. That’s right in line if not a bit more than what Davonte Adams produced in the same role his first 2 seasons in the league. What’s more, in the one game Tolbert was the first option he had 4 rec for 98 yards with a clipboard QB!

As for Turpin, after 3 years he’s still one of the worst , most limited route runners in the league. If he didn’t have immense value as a returner he would have been out the league and never progressed beyond a practice squad player!
Good points, he has to get targets to do anything.
I did not know he had 6-7 td's !

Also how coaches draw up plays, and schemes, etc determine how good wr's can be.
Lambe got more targets in 24 than any wr in the nfl lol so thats why he looked good.
Guys who only get a few targets, or few snaps, it is hard to show something if your not on the field,
or not getting targets when you are.

Well said!!

I agree. I think in a #3 role Tolbert will do well. I feel Tolbert as a #3 in low on the priority list of things to worry about. If there’s concern about Tolbert in his role then we’ve done well putting together an offense IMO.
