NFL Takeaways: Why the Cowboys Are Done With the Term ‘All In’

Dallas COO Stephen Jones discusses the George Pickens trade. Plus, notes on Derek Carr’s retirement, Bill Belichick’s search for PR help, the Browns’ QB competition and more.

Dallas Cowboys

I think the Dallas Cowboys are done with the term “all in.” And it’s certainly not because they aren’t in that mindset. More so, I got the sense, after talking to Dallas COO Stephen Jones late Friday morning, it’s even the idea they wouldn’t be for the season ahead.

Jones knows why it keeps coming up, a year after his father, Jerry Jones, used the term. He just doesn’t see how they wouldn’t be.

“I don’t buy into all that. Name one person that isn’t all in,” Jones said. “I’d hate the fans to hear their owner say that people aren’t all in, when you’re competing in the NFL … I mean, it’s kind of a joke. Every year we line up, we’re moving our chips in.”

I can name two people who are not all in. Jerry and Stephen Jones. All in means doing everything possible to win a Super Bowl. That means a willingness to sign top tier free agents in positions of need. It means signing you best defensive player instead of dragging out his extension and sending mixed signals.

The Cowboys are "all in, within limits". It is not the same as other teams going all in.

Adding to the list, it means attempting a new managerial strategy in order to achieve goals. It means retiring as much of the franchise's decades-old, embedded culture so that any newly sought after culture can blossom without being tainted day one. I am certain this list can continue growing.

This really highlights just how clueless he is.

Does every team realistically have a chance to win a SB every year? Heck no.

This league is based on rewarding losing. IE the draft. How do you get the best chance at drafting the best quality players and specifically QBs. Top 5 draft picks.

Manipulation of the cap is a cyclical operation. Max out the card. Push payments. Eat dead cap. Rebuild. Wash, rinse repeat.

Coordinating when you should lose vs when your roster is on the verge of being good MATTERS.

But to keep the ad money, naming rights, sponsors etc flowing in, Jed wants to keep the team relevant. Mediocre PAYS. Unfortunately it rarely wins.

All in means reload, players get magically injured often during the season in which they feel why should they try and work hard when the season was already lost with the all in comments

It is one thing to say you are "all in." What matters is what you do. Action speaks louder than words, always. Saying that last offseason then being so inactive defined Jerry and Stephen.

To their credit they did better this offseason than last, marginally. Still even this offseason their actions do not merit the "all in" label.

I don't care at this point.
I am just ready to see what the new coaching staff can do with all this talent they keep telling us about year after year.

Has Stephen ever explained last off-season? How can you be "all in" while losing a bunch of veterans and signing next to nobody to replace them?

Probably at some point mumbled about the cap, long term, tough decisions, Eagles can't keep on getting away with this.

My middle name is Wayne also, because my Grand Mother loved John Wayne.

Junior desperately feels compelled to take up for Daddy, no matter how absurd it is!

In all honesty, he probably feels that it's his duty to make his dad appear lucid, even if it isn't so?!

Every year yall move yall chips in?

So last year what was that ? You folded your hand before the season started

Cause you know... actions speak louder than words. JJ/Stephen just clueless to think it's not obvious to the fans.
