Huge make or break year for Terrence Steele

He definitely has issues with lateral movement. I saw someone suggest a movie inside to G, which does make sense. His run blocking would be highlighted and his lateral movement issues in pass protection would be reduced greatly.
Problem is the money. He is far overpaid as a T and would be even more so as a G.
I know we are going with a line of Guyton/Smith/Beebe/Booker/Steele. (L to R)

I do wonder though if out T's struggle (like last year), if we wouldn't be better with Smith at LT (our best OL), Booker then at LG (where he played so well in college), Beebe at C, Steele at RG (where his run blocking can mbe maximized and his pass protection issue mitigated) and Guyton at RT (where he played in college).

Assuming Guyton and Steele struggle like last year (which is by no means guaranteed BTW), we would improve at LT (Guyton to Smith), Close at LG (Smith to Booker), same at C (Beebe), close at RG (Booker to Steele, assuming Steele's issues are mitigated by the move) and improved at RT (Steele to Guyton). Seems like we'd be much stronger at both T positions and very close at both G positions.
Excellent post and points. Agree 100 percent.

Terrence Steele's calling card has always been is run blocking, but his pass protection has to improve or he will find himself off this roster. However, he will be given every opportunity to succeed, but he may have reached his peak potential.

Last season he gave up 9 sacks and 37 pressures. He was ranked 91st out of 138 Tackles last season in pass protection. A rating of 58. Lane Johnson for example didn't give up a single sack and had a rating 88. Steele's running blocking grade was 15th. His breakout season was pretty much the same, a top 10 run blocker and a bottom half pass protector.

You can protect a Tackle with a TE chipping or staying in to block, but that affects the entire offense, especially with a LT in his developmental stage.
I knew this thread would turn into another bash thread. Too bad, this is a good topic. This kid showed some promise and then gets injured. Players rehab at different rates, I think he'll be healthy again and a line that is able to stabilize will provide the continuity needed to be effective. Anyone that know a little football, will talk about cohesiveness and being able to know and trust your teammates game. It'll take a lot of reps in preseason, but knowing, understanding and trusting the rest of the line play is paramount, not to mention coming in stronger, in all three areas....upper body, core and lower body.

Let’s hope the new staff can fix some of flaws in pass protection. More of a balanced scheme should help, but he still is going to need to hold up.

There is hope as our new oc had little talent to work with in Arizona, but they performed well as a unit. Building continuity is extremely important and helps that they won’t be relying on aging players any longer who are in and out of the lineman and not on the practice field

Unlazy focus that carries on due to trust and pride. That works all the way to Dak Prescott. A great by product team cohesion and attention to details.

Accountable.

There is reason to believe he will improve. Another year removed from surgery and new OL coaches. Both reasons to think he will be better.

Not really. He wasn’t any good at pass protection before the injury and that was after 4 years in the league.

But if you want to believe he will just suddenly get better after 6 years in the league. You’re allowed to.

Not really.
I just gave 2 reasons why he will be better. Both are biggies but getting new coaches is likely the biggest.

But if you want to believe he won't get better being more healthy and getting better coaches that's cool. You’re allowed to.

I’m a Texas Tech season ticket holder and have watched Terance Steele play since his freshman year there in 2015. He blocked two seasons for Pat Mahomes in the 2015-16 seasons.

To be honest I was really surprised Steele made it in the NFL. He was never a great pass blocker and in the days when Mahomes was at Tech, they didn’t exactly run the ball that much so you didn’t see his run blocking ability much.

One thing I’ve always seen about Steele is for his size, he is very athletic and his rookie year in Dallas he surprised me how well he played immediately as an undrafted FA in 2020.

His athleticism allows me to still have some hope he can improve his pass blocking skills. I do think the team rushed him back a little after his knee injury. He was injured on Dec 11, 2022 and was back playing in 2023 early in the season. I honestly don’t believe he was ready.

I agree with you that this is a pivotal year for Steele. If he doesn’t have a better year he probably needs to be a June 1 release in 2026.

The tackle situation in Dallas is teetering on sunk-cost fallacy. Changes might have to happen in 25 if we're serious about being a contender.

Don’t disagree with you but this FO is not known to move on from their mistakes early. They wait until they have no choice. So don’t expect any early admissions of problems with Steele or Guyton.

Two long shots IMO

I'll be honest he is my biggest concern on the O-line. He needs to return to pre-injury form and solidify the right side or that will be their glaring weakness.
I tend to believe he will. Many players just need that rehab time and then a full year of work to return to normal. Some never quite do and that's the concern. If he doesn't show marketable improvement early this season, we may need to make a quick change.
Because it may be an indication that he may never get back to what he was.

Either way I think Steele is gone.
