No fluff, no company man stuff. Just a straight up article.

Mickey covers the 1 year contracts.
Either by FA, or done in trades. Quite a few of them. So this team could look very much different in 2026, again. Brecause of this teams love for 1 year contracts. What if all of these guys have a great season. This team could be torn apart before it gets started. They can't keep them all.

More inept doing by Jerry & Son, Inc. I know they keep saying, build through the draft. So these 1 year deals are stop gap type signings, which is necessary. But where has that really got them. There are just to many of them every year.

They are not 1 or 2 or 3 players away, where they can bring in these type of players, then lose them to FA. And no, it is not just to get comp picks.

Good stuff.

It looks like Jerry/Stephen are playing Money Ball.

No one talks about the disaster we have in the QB room.

I guess they could go with 2 year deals instead of the 1 year deal, but then they would get in cap trouble when they cut them next year. Also I think these players don’t want to sign a long term low contract, they want to prove they can play then hit the jackpot. 1 solid year with no injuries and they could hit it big.

First bold: But that's what Mickey does - it's what he's known for. I can't recall a single story from him that didn't tow the company line. To me he has always been quite nauseating.

Like you said in the second bold part, the 1-year deals are nothing more than just filling spots - stop gap type signings as you call them. They've never been intended to increase the chances of competing for championships, it's just Jerry filling holes with whatever dirt he can find lying around.

I'm not sure why Mickey thought this was a subject worth writing about.

The headline says a ton about this organization’s philosophy of team building. Go short and cheap in free agency making hope a strategy centerpiece.

I will ask a serious question for us all to ponder: What NFL organization has had great playoff success this century with this philosophy?

I will quote the Mick-ster himself from this article as a great description of what this FO does every season:
They really need to hit on at least one of these two dice rolls because coming up craps likely would have them in the unenviable position of scouring the veteran free-agent market after the roster cuts to 53.”
When your front office is depending on “dice rolls” to be successful, it’s a very bad sign.

You'll never convince me that this whole year isn't dedicated to landing a top pick in the draft next year (QB).and hiring a head coach
Because then it's a easy, road to the dance.

Did you read the article?
Lately his stuff has not been condescending, nor fluff, nor company man stuff.

I would like them to keep Pickens if he has success here. The rest, can and will be replaced. Well, a few will be kept if the play very good. Such and Bland / Elam.

Jazz, you always crack me up when you add the disclaimer "no fluff, no company man stuff" when you post a Mickey article.

Hopefully a few of these guys play well and we end up signing them during the season (if that's allowed), i'm no cap specialist, just a guy looking not to complain all the time!

Who knows with Jerry. He may extend all of them an hour before KO on September 4th.
Along with you pal Micah. :muttley:

None of them have any incentive to do it though except maybe a guy like Turner or Elam.

Considering the off season was light years better than last year, I can't buy that they have any intention to tank this year. If they would have repeated that disaster, then yes.

One of the main differences this year is that they seemed to focus a lot of their one-year deals on former first-round picks (Fowler, Elam, Murray and Turner), whether in free agency or through trades. They also went and got their players early in FA instead of waiting to see what was left after the feeding frenzy the first week or two.

Whether that will make a difference in the quality of cheap FAs is unknown. If they do play well, I do agree with you that it puts the team in the position for them to be one and done. However, Dallas has shown that it will re-sign one-year wonders (Kearse, Hooker, even Fowler) if they perform well.

I agree with all of that, with the caveat, that we hired a 28 year journeyman as a head coach. I think we ended up with him because Jerry simply didn't have any buyers for his head coach gig and was avoiding major embarrassment.
I personally feel that they are aware that Dak's serious playing days are pretty much over with this latest injury. I cringe at his running attempts since the ankle disaster, at 30, its over. The fact KM didn't come here speaks volumes.
Joe is a 50/50 shot at striking oil.
Otherwise we'll be picking top 3.

I should be ashamed. Bur alas....I have...

Moneyball actually makes a lot of sense when it comes to building a team through trades. But honestly, whatever Jerry and Stephen are doing with the Cowboys just feels completely backwards. They keep bringing in these stopgap players for no real reason, just so they can keep pouring money into our overpaid quarterback and a few other positions. It’s frustrating to watch, and it just doesn’t add up if you’re trying to build a winning team.
