RELEASED *** Cowboys 53-player Roster Cuts/Released Thread ***

I watched every defensive play when Mazi was in the game against the Falcons. In my opinion, he is a terrible defensive lineman. The only play he made was because the offensive line failed to block Mazi, and he tackled the ball carrier for a loss. That was a freebie. The entire rest of the game, he was being pushed around by the second and third stringers like he was a floor polisher. I actually think a floor polisher has more strength and force than Mazi. I really feel bad for the guy. I remember when we drafted him and they told us he was incredibly strong, athletic, and a freak. None of that was true. He will stay on the team because we have no one better. That is because we have no General Manager. We should not draft any more Tacos, Schoons, or Mazi's from Michigan. OBTW, Schoon should not make the team. We have solid backups to Ferguson, not named Schoonmaker.

He plays with ZERO intensity.

Pretty sure he hates the game itself and is in it just for the money at this point.

I agree, but that doesn't make it reality. I'm sure the coaching staff puts their two cents in, but GMs still set the roster 90% of the time.

Jerry absolutely has the final say as the GM, or at least some combo of Jerry & Stephen. I'm sure he takes what the coaching staff has to say serious, but I would bet a guy like McCarthy had a lot more say than a 1st time HC like Schottenheimer would.
And Jerry and Stephen should. Like it or not, in today’s NFL there are financial and cap ramifications. The brain trust should be asking coaching if they want to cut Mazi, who are you replacing him with that is better. If the answer is no one, but we can equal him via pickup. What’s the point in that?

Meh to Holden, would have been nice to stash him as the #6 and let him develop but you couldn't keep him if you want guys like Houston and Winfrey on the 53.

Flournoy is above him still.
Agreed. There's one UDFA WR every year with a great camp. Most are Dennis Houstons, while a small few are Miles Austins. I like Holden, but not shedding any tears at him being on the PS or potentially with another team.

Yes he has the final say so, base don a team decision. He is not making all these choices on his own.
It seems to me Brian has had more say so than MM had, and he has been HC for what, 7 months.
Based on what? I'm yet to see much of a different approach to the offseason/roster construction so far. Minimal FA activity, bigger acquisitions via trade, bringing in a coordinator who was a former HC that Jerry has worked with in the past, etc. I would love to be wrong on this one, and maybe we will get some surprise moves for the final 53 that suggest I'm wrong, but typically 1st time HCs don't have nearly the pull that a Reid/McVay/Payton/Harbaugh etc has. GMs are typically hesitant to give away roster decision powers to unestablished guys and HCs have to earn that right first. I doubt a Dave Canalas, Daboll, Callahan, etc have a ton of roster decision power either. Yes they absolutely have a seat at the table, but the GM is going to do what he wants at the end of the day.

Exactly.

You don’t keep the guys like Winfrey and Houston when you keep Holden and Fant

No argument here, I think you summed that up pretty well. Jerry will likely listen to the coaching staff, but they better have a plan to justify the move and that coach better be ready to put their butt on the line for that player.

Looks like a lot of PUP/IR stashes to help get this roster down to 53.

Turner, Mafah, Mingo, Overshown, Revel, and Butler so far. The only question is who gets cut once those guys are able to return.

You are forgetting the structure of the FO here. It is not normal to other teams. So I am told.
From what Jerry has said, most decisions are made by committee, as the discuss everything. It is not up to on person.

They were far more active in 2025 than in 2024. Brian picked his own coaches, though I am sure there were discussions on it as well.
