Effective NFL offenses evolve. This league became a mostly pass oriented league the last 25 years. Pass heavy offenses featuring high percentage passes that make the QB, WR, and TE positions much more valuable had become the coin of the realm over the last 2-3 decades.

But things have changed. Defenses have evolved too over the years to where pass coverage has become easier to master. Good defenses evolved to where great pass rushes and pass coverage became gold. BUT….Things have evolved again.

So how do you challenge a defense today?

• By having a running game capable of punishing defenses that cheat their safeties back to stop the intermediate pass and deep pass.
• If an offense does not have a RB who forces safeties (and maybe LBs as well) to respect the run, it puts all the pressure on the QB to carry the offense. There may be 2 QBs in the NFL that can carry a team by himself.
• By possessing a below average running game, the Cowboys are set up to depend too much on a 32 year old good but not great QB who has always played best with a strong running game.

It’s not a mystery. In 2025, having a quality running game capable of making defenses fear what it can do gives your QB and offense a chance to be good.

Without wearing blue fan glasses, I’m not seeing a running back on this roster that makes defensive coordinators respect the run. Until we do get someone that can put fear in a defense, I cannot expect deep playoff runs. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong. Hope so.

Great points and I love how the past few seasons certain teams have returned to playing "bully ball" (i.e., Baltimore, Philly) where their offensive coordinator is committed to the run AND they have the personnel to do it. They line up and say "try and stop it" like we used to be in the 90s courtesy of Jimmy.

But Baltimore and Philly are elite franchises and we are not. I hope our offensive line gels and develops but hope is the key word where we are counting on a rookie to replace Zak Martin and hoping Tyler Guyton becomes a decent player. Then as you said, look at our low dollar RB group.

I love the return of bully ball to the NFL and this season should be an interesting one. But I'm not holding my breath that the 2025 roster will be able to run the ball, especially since our leaky defense can't stop the run.

Absolutely agree. The Cowboys lack of FA activity gives the false impression that they are horrible at drafting. In reality they are one of the better drafting teams in football, but sitting out FA puts extra attention and urgency on the draft.

Yes, add in your point earlier about what you can realistically expect out of a draft and it’s clear why their plan never works.

It’s as if they count on every draft to be a grand slam.

Then they complain that there’s not enough “pie.” They should have been doing everything possible to win while certain guys were on rookie deals, now they will end up with a very top heavy roster…and those guys aren’t enough, as has already been proven.

It’s called not having a plan….or not not being capable of seeing how to win under the current system.

Yes. That’s a poor use of cap dollars. There’s no doubt that Henry would have been a better use of cap space. The one thing that this team does very poorly with is the allocation of cap dollars.

That a horrible comparison. Joe Frazier was an all time great. Hurts is closer to Gerry Cooney. Cooney was 28-3 but we all know his record was way better than his talent...

2021 was actually a good draft in that you got a All Pro and a solid starter out of it.

BUT when you ignore FA except for dumpster diving and cheap quick fixes, your draft has to be much better EVERY YEAR.

His issue has been injuries. Loads of Ravens fans were surprised he was cut because he had a great camp.

I mean is it football when we are asking an LB to take on an offensive lineman and wondering why the middle of the DLine is soft? Since that Rams RB they pulled off the streets before the playoff game ran for 123 yards and 2 TD's? I mean it was a problem before then but so far since 2019 the issue has been allowed to languish with the same claim that "well we can't find DT's" - but yea, maybe we can ask the LB-ers to do a few more bench presses and some P90x to help them take on dudes who outweigh them by over a 100 lbs. Should work out, I mean it hasn't for the last decade but this time will be "different."
