Once again, Darren Woodson is up for the HoF. Here is a comparison of Woodson to four safeties already inducted. These names are the ones that often are cited since Jerry has owned the team. INT is interception, FF is forced fumble, TFL is tackle for loss, AV is approximate value, ST is solo tackles, TT is total tackles (solo+assisted). Only first team AP is counted. The other acronyms you can figure out.

Woodson: Games-178, INT-23, FF-15, Sack-11, ST-827, TT-927, TFL-26, AV-100 AP-3, PB-5.
Ed Reed: Games-174, INT-64, FF-11, Sack-6, ST-534, TT-646, TFL-34, AV-131, AP-5, PB-9.
Polamalu: Games-158, INT-32, FF-14, Sack-12, ST-583, TT-783, TFL-56, AV-117, AP-4, PB-9.
Dawkins: Games-224, INT-37, FF-36, Sack-26, ST-911, TT-1147, TFL-59, AV-142, AP-4, PB-9.
Lynch: Games-224, INT-26, FF-17, Sack-13, ST-319, TT-1059, TFL-28, AV-116, AP-2, PB-9.

Of course, none of this accounts for the defensive schemes the players were a part of throughout their careers. Woodson played his entire career with Dallas, and Polamalu played his entire career with Pittsburgh. Dawkins and Lynch played the majority of their careers with Philly and Tampa, with both ending their careers in Denver. Reed, played most of his career with Baltimore, then played for Houston and the Jets during his final year.

IMO, Woodson is a tier below the trio of Reed, Polamalu, and Dawkins. There are two comparisons that stand out and both involve John Lynch. Dawkins and Lynch both played 224 games, and Dawkins, both in stats and the eye test, was clearly a better and more impactful player than Lynch by a considerable margin. Of all of the players listed, Lynch is by far the least effective solo tackler.

The comparison between Lynch and Woodson is interesting. The numbers across the board are very comparable, and if one wants to scale the percentages based on games played, even decreasing scalable numbers due to age regression, better in almost every category. This is easy to see. Heck, if age regression tied to games played is taken into account, Dawkins is the second-best tackling safety of all-time, behind Ronnie Lott.

If Lynch is in, there is no football reason I can see for Darren Woodson not being in the Pro Football HoF. Put him in now!
 
Not going to be a homer on this, woodson is #5 on the list by a LONG shot!!!

The problem with the Lynch example is what got him over the hump was not stat related.

1. His super bowl team wasn't overshadowed by the offense, if anything it was the complete opposite. I would wager at least 80% of the people who watched that super bowl could not tell you who the starting quarterback or the starting running back was for Tampa. If you think about it that's actually insane, that might be the only super bowl winning team in the 2000s in which you can say that. Woody it was the opposite, the super bowl teams all everybody talks about is the Triplets and all of the pro bowlers on the offensive line.

2. Lynch stayed relevant post career which kept him in the public eye. Within like 9 or 10 weeks of his retirement he joins Fox as a commentator for almost a decade and then he became a GM. I also don't think it was a coincidence that the year his team went to the super bowl, and he won the award for executive of the year his name got called by Canton the very next cycle

Interior offensive line and safety are really hard to get in. Eric Weddle is a modern example of a safety whose most likely going to be the odd man out. All decade team, 6x pro bowl, 2x first team all pro, 3x 2nd team. I'd be shocked if he makes Canton.

Unfortunately for those positions you either have to drastically stand out or stay relevant post-retirement.
 
Reed and Troy P. then it gets close. Not too much difference with the rest. But Woodson was better IMHO than Cliff Harris. And he's in. So, Woodson should be also.
 
What hurts Woody is his low number of Pro Bowls back when that still meant something

But I agree that what he did overall in his career deserves the HOF
 
Other guys already being in the Hall notwithstanding, I think Rodney Harrison is also up for the Hall. Pretty sure 2 Safeties aren't going in at the same time. Are any of you putting Woodson in before Harrison?

He had fewer PBs then Woody
more sacks and picks
it is a close call when you add in what Woody overall did as regards his versatility
Being the first DB to get both 30 picks and 30 sacks does add cache to Harrison so overall probably he does get the nod to those that did not watch both of them play
