We don't draft well defensively; we might as well trade a pick for known NFL commodity!

I went back 5 years just looking at our defensive draft picks, some names stand out most noticeably Diggs, Micah, Bland, i'll leave an * for guys like Osa and Overshown. Other wise you can look at our drafts over the last 5 years and say where is the defensive help. What are we doing to actually develop these players. Did we scout these players well enough. Did we reach for some players, did we get players we shouldn't have gotten. We like to take players at times that have endured injuries in college and we expect them to eventually be able to perform at the level they were rated before their injury.

With that said, I came to the conclusion that i'd be fine giving up a 1st round pick to get an already established NFL player instead of drafting one. This player would have to be under 30 years of age and would hopefully have some years left on his contract.

I know you're tired of the trade posts, but hey it's a family blog where we come to discuss thoughts!!! Please give your thoughts!!!!

Short term, they have no choice but to do this while they still have a decent QB... But I wouldn't use the first rounders, we don't want superstars via FA, we need serviceable or slightly above average.

Long term, whatever they've been doing needs to be blown up, people replaced, priorities reset. Today we play a team with a real defense, a franchise with a healthy picture of what a roster should look like. Balanced, hard. I'm tired of this team being soft and weak on the defensive side.

Go back to 2016 when they drafted Dak. They've picked some decent players. Maliek Collins seems to be doing okay now.. Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis were decent picks. Vander Esch would have been okay if not for the injuries. Armstrong was solid for a 4th round pick. In 2021 they took Parsons, Odighizuwa, Golston, and Wright. Parsons was a great player for them. The rest are still contributing somewhere.

I am not sure how many good players can be expected from each draft class. How do other teams do compared to Dallas?

But I do admit it seems they are not as good at finding defensive talent as they are at finding guys on offense. Then again, the last 3 years have not looked great so far.

An already established DT or edge rusher on a rookie contract is the only two positions I would deal a 1st round pick on.
Who are those two players available to us?

Understandable. And a valid point.

Did you forget about Micah, and that we got Clark in that trade, along with those 2 fist round picks. They can easily move around in the draft in the next 2 years and get some top line defensive players.

I would mind a trade, some later round draft picks and maybe even a few players. But keep those 1st round draft picks.
It will be a disaster to trade evenly one of them away.
And trading Diggs is most likely out, since he is on IR.

This team is more than one player away to be true contenders this year.

With our offense this season, all you need is an average defense that can give you a few stops or turnovers. If there is a game changing, type of defender available, you swing for the fences. With the extra draft capital you have the ability to make it happen and still have our own picks.

Right now, I don’t think such a player is available. Crosby, Simmons appear untouchable at least through the media reports, Bengals are very much like the cowboys still fighting to stay alive in playoff contention. Now if one can be had, you make that move!

Thanks for your words!! I'm not a fan of trading our 1st round picks trust and believe, yes I said it, but it was just a thought I had this morning (thinking about the cowboys all the time lol). Just because you have something doesn't mean you have to use it up. How bad is it burning Jerry to want to use one of those picks, I hope it's not at all. If anything trade a 2nd round pick. Like you said you can move around. Maybe we can find a team we can trade down with and get their 2nd round pick and get back what we lost!!

average but these players have to be good for this scheme, doesn't seem like we have much of that right now, but with Diggs gone maybe they can mold these guys and get them to buy into things

we drafted Micah, Bland and Diggs . Id say they were good lol. What about Dono Wilson. He's been decent. Jordan Lewis was good. We draft good . I just wish we drafted a bit better.

We just don’t know if they can keep this offense together or if Dak can stay healthy as he gets older, you make a bold move now if one becomes available

We had a hugely known NFL commodity. So naturally we traded him for draft picks so we can not draft well defensively with them. Lol.

Coog wakes up at 5 a.m.

I haven't posted enough threads.

May as well post one before I'm even out of bed. Lol

There's two problems w/ our drafting of D.

Philosophy. We don't like to spend prime resources on the interior of the D. Which is the most important part of the D. If the middle is weak, it permeates to every part of the D. (Yes, you need talent elsewhere also)

Player Evaluations. We are absolutely beyond horrible at evaluating players. Mazi? C'moooooon.

It's not about who we draft, it's who we don't draft and the positions we ignore.

but mazi DOES play in the inside of the DL, so we HAVE allocated resources to that position (just thinking like they think lol)
