I think Eberflus has found something with this 5 man front

The five man front forces single matchups across the board, if a team decides to double a particular player that means a TE will be forced to block an edge. Teams could also use a running back to assist in protection, but that advantage goes to the defense.

Benefits are far greater against the run as their are more bodies at the line of scrimmage. Also, this alignment is more effective at stopping the read-option QB's.

Many forget Eberflus came from Rob Ryan's coaching tree. Both Ryan brothers learned from their dad's famous 46 Bear defense. The five man front is just a variation of Buddy's front that was so successful. The way you beat this alignment is to spread you out, which is why you cannot use it exclusively.

I was thinking this was kind of reminiscent of Ryan while he was here. Funny that he had a tough time as well getting everyone on the same page as well. Regardless we have some horses up front now. Amazing how we went from no DT’s for years and years and now we suddenly have a cupboard of them.

I think you are right ......... and remember, even Stephen Jones admitted we could see quite a bit of the five-man front. I love it ........but my only concern is that you have to force the QB into making quick, unfavorable decisions coz your backend is vulnerable.

Well, the five man front is just an abandonment of his actual scheme. His standard sets rely on a four man front to get pressure without blitzing.

Schottenheimer told Eberflus earlier in the season that he was going to be up in his business going to the positional group meetings and that there would be more “consultation” about the defensive approach.
While a five man front will use the DAE for some coverage (Eze it seems), it does, by its very nature result in more people at the line of scrimmage and/or rushing the passer

So, I don’t think Eberflus found anything. I think Schottenheimer leaned earlier in the year and then when Q was brought in, it cemented a change in the fronts. It doesn’t take a defensive genius to get your best players on the field.

Here are some stats for our man coverage percentage earlier this year. As you can see, there’s been a shift to more man, which I believe is the result of Schottenheimers involvement.
  • Week 1 (vs Eagles): 3%
  • Week 2 (vs Giants): 4.4%
  • Week 3 (vs Bears): 14.3%
  • Week 4 (vs Packers): 13%
  • Week 5 (vs Jets): 16.7%
  • Week 6 (vs Panthers): 14.8%
  • Week 7 (vs Commanders): 49.2
  • Week 8 (vs Broncos): 36.3%
  • Week 9 (vs Cardinals) 26.3%
We’ll have to see how it turns out at the end of the year. Opponents personnel will dictate some of it. All in all though it’s several steps in the right direction.

While I’ve been as keen as anyone to move on from Eberflus after the season, I don’t think that’s going to happen because of Jerry. I’m just happy that Schottenheimer has jumped in.

I would move on from him but you are probably right. If I was Jerry I’d sit down with shotty and get his option on who matches what the overal plsn of the team. But Jerry isn’t big on input from others. My fear is Jerry doesn’t know already what the off season plan staff wise, player wise is. I’m big on having a plan and following that plan. Jerry is big on winging it

I think the Elam decision is evidence of Jerry having a surprising amount of faith in Schottenheimers input. No way he made that call on his own.

Based off the 2-7 Raiders with a QB with more INTs than TDs ?
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL, seriously!!! Let's see more against better teams, and teams that could possibly see our D and create mismatches for it. This is what these guys are paid to do!!

Well easy to get excited but it was the Raiders. See similar success against the Eagles and will be worth talking about.

lol the raiders were next on the schedule !
now the eagles so what will mountain boy say if we beat them too??

We added a stud DL, no doubt we're better than before.

But people are acting like we've turned a corner because we beat up on inarguably one of the league's worst offenses and teams. This is little different an NYG fan getting excited about Russell Wilson after Week 2 in Dallas.

we just want to see them beat some teams with good records, not one team but multiple! Soon as we beat philly, people will say OH THAT'S IT we finally beat a good team now all the haters hush it lol, nope we need more!!

yes, but it isn’t going to be run 100% if the time

I know, right. We look great against the Raiders and it's Superbowl baby! How many times do we need to see this before we learn? Beat up on the tomato cans and then get trashed by the real contenders.

I admit that it's too soon to know it'll be that way going forward. But it's not like we don't have history to go by.
