The five man front forces single matchups across the board, if a team decides to double a particular player that means a TE will be forced to block an edge. Teams could also use a running back to assist in protection, but that advantage goes to the defense.
Benefits are far greater against the run as their are more bodies at the line of scrimmage. Also, this alignment is more effective at stopping the read-option QB's.
Many forget Eberflus came from Rob Ryan's coaching tree. Both Ryan brothers learned from their dad's famous 46 Bear defense. The five man front is just a variation of Buddy's front that was so successful. The way you beat this alignment is to spread you out, which is why you cannot use it exclusively.
