Definitive proof the base defense argument is ridiculous!

Who cares? The way to build a championship caliber team is to Have the highest paid QB in the league even though he has never done anything. Then have two of the highest paid WR's. Then draft OL with your first rd pick every year. Everyone knows that.

Seahawks played just 1.5% of their snaps in base defense. Even the NFL average is just 29.1% which out of an average of around a 60 snap game is between 15-18 snaps.

their front 4 was able to generate pressure by themselves. if you can do that, then you drop more into coverage and makes passing difficult. if they couldn't generate pressure, then they have to bring more...so yeah, give me a strong front 4.

I swear these people.

During the week Romo eluded to this suggesting that the Patriots would have to be able to run the ball to be effective and they could not.

The scheme and zone coverage are what won the game. Yes, the front four generated pressure, but the zone coverage and overall scheme allowed the pass rush to get home.

The Seahawks also disguised their blitz very well. They blitzed Witherspoon, which caused the fumble. Yes, the four-man front was excellent for the Seahawks, but they are well coached and lined up correctly, which can be attributed to coaching.

Most of the time, the receivers were covered, giving their four-man front more time to get home. Drake Maye at times had time to throw, but the simulated pressure and the inability to beat the zone coverage are what beat them.

I don't think they played any man-to-man scheme at all.

well, if the front 4 is incompetent, then you can only cover for so long and you tend to bring more in the box and more rushers.
but when you front 4 can get to the QB, then you drop more into coverage and there is less passing lanes.

yes, they go hand in hand. but give a QB, 6 or 7 second time...the WRs will get open eventually.

I heard Jerry say that renogotiating with Quennin Williams and Kenny Clark will be too expensive, so we’re going to cut them and use that money to bring in a platoon of JAGs at Defensive Tackle.

With all that depth and some “schemes”, we can easily add to our JAG’s at defensive end and replicate all of these awesome pass rushes we saw in the playoffs.

I’m not discounting a competent four-man front. They are certainly well coached to generate pressure on the quarterback.

The Seahawks’ scheme is so well coached that I think it can hold up for six to seven seconds. They play a Cover 2 shell with six defensive backs, so quarterbacks have to throw into coverage regardless, and the QB must take a few seconds to identify the coverage—whether it’s Cover 3, Cover 4, Cover 6, etc.

For me, it's about how far out of tune this organazation is. What a joke! Until the old buzzard hires someone to run this team, we are always going to be stuck in this abyss. I'm very happy for DLaw and the Seahawks. Complete team defense was a work of art. Conggratulations to them.

Lol! May not be winning SBs, but we're still lining Jerry's pockets...that's his SB....keep them whining and coming back.....here we are.

Need talent. It's just not that complicated.
Right. And to use that talent right once you have it. Poor talent and a scheme that doesn't fit that talent results in what we saw from our team last year.

I don't think what Seattle did makes the base defense argument ridiculous, it just shows that Seattle knew what it could do well and did it. We're going to be a team that's strength is at the DT position, so playing a five-man front makes sense for us. But how you play out of that front doesn't have to be much different than what Seattle was doing. You can employ it as a 5-2 with 4 DBs or a 3-3-5 with 5 DBs, but most of the time whatever the front number is, you are going to be rushing four because rushing five leaves holes in the coverage.

Now, a good defensive coordinator is going to pick and choose which four to rush (might be a nickel corner on some plays with two of the front five dropping in short zone) and when to blitz, But the key is doing what it takes with your coverage schemes and how you scheme up pressure to keep the QB uncomfortable. Seattle obviously managed that.

The best defense is when your front four dominate and pressure the QB without a bunch of blitzes
Some of Seattle’s biggest plays were when they blitzed.
The best defense is a defense that puts quick pressure on the QB. Percentage wise more of Seattle’s quick pressures were on blitz’s compared to when they did not blitz.

Might want to watch some tape because that's all Seattle did was bring pressure from the CB or safety tonight....and New England never adjusted. Their game plan was to beat the blitz by hitting quick hitters and running screens. Josh Mcdaniels got taken to the cleaners tonight.

I know Maye was under a ton of pressure but NE needs to get him some targets . At best Diggs is a mercenary . And I thought McDaniels as a counter to the pressure never really tried to establish a run game making Seattle bring in some safeties to help .

And when you’re discounting the RB position in the NFL look who was the games MVP . It does so much to help your QB when the defense has to respect your running game . Here’s hoping J Williams is back and Dallas doesn’t decide to go fishing for a RB round 5,
