Trade value for Pickens might not be what people are expecting

Some teams would give up a first for him, probably in the back half though. The upcoming, big contract is a concern for most teams I would imagine.
Its almost always that way when big name wrs are traded. These teams always seem to immediately extend the player and stretch out the cap.

I agree with you, hes worth at least a first. Dude is 24 years old and balled out. The only hesitation would be behavioral concerns, which weren't an issue last season.

The market these guys are talking about is nonsense. Sounds more like they are baiting Jerry into a 2nd round tender lol

Yikes!!! You willing to settle on a 2nd best case or possibly just a 3rd and 4th? I'm not!

Sounds like an AFC team that needs a receiver talking. :D

In all seriousness, I think it all comes down to whether the Cowboys want any picks they receive in return in 2026 or if they're okay splitting them between 2026 and 2027 drafts.

This is a post I made a few weeks ago ..

You typically don't see a franchise player traded that doesn't include a first round pick in return.
Since the Cowboys traded #3 (2026) and #5 (2027) round picks for Pickens last year before his great season, it's reasonable to expect a #1 round and #3 round pick in return minimum.
The Cowboys already have two first round picks in 2026 so unless they were trying to get the #1 overall pick, there's a lot more benefit to them adding a second first round pick in 2027 given they traded one of their picks (the higher one) away for Williams.
That's why I said if they traded Pickens this offseason, I expect them to get a third round pick (could be a second round) in 2026 for the one they traded for Pickens and a first round pick in 2027 to once again give them two first round picks in 2027 to hopefully target a quarterback then.

If Pickens were in this year’s draft, he would be either the first or second receiver off the board. So a second-rounder is a big, fat no.
If Pickens was a top 7-8 pick in this years draft , he'd be making around $7 million a year. If he is tagged, he makes around $28 million. Teams take that into consideration when putting a trade value on players.

How does the tag and trade scenario work? It would seem that if Dallas tags Pickens then he has to sign the offer before any trade can be made. Once officially tagged, does the receiving team have to work out a long-term contract before the trade can be completed or do they just assume the one year tag and take their chances? Does that then mean Dallas must use the exclusive tag to trade him or can they use the non-exclusive?

I think the best option is non-exclusive tag him and let Pickens go determine his worth. Dallas gets picks if they don't want to match. Jerry doesn't seem to be good at exclusive negotiations.

If we let him walk, the comp pick would almost certainly be a 3rd. A 2nd seems low. I'd rather trade him for a defender or two if we can't get a 1st. If the trade market isn't there, just keep him and have him play on the tag/work out a deal. I don't think anyone is interested in letting him go for peanuts.

lol someone would give a 1st period.

He’s a beast…I would trade him for two firsts, Dan needs

Hes worth a 1st. Period. Otherwise tag and figure it out
Imagine losing the guy who was a top 5 play making wr in the league last year and is 24 yesrs old for any of the list of 2nd round picks we've had over the last 15 years. I don't have a ton of faith in the jones boys, but I don't think they're that stupid.

Contract has to be worked out before anything can happen. We can use the non-exclusive tag on him, however if another team were to sign him it guarantees us 2 1st round picks which I don't think any team will give up for Pickens. I think the most likely scenario is we tag him, he plays out another year, balls out again and gets top WR1 money next year to another team. I don't think this front office is sold on him, particularly his personality.
