Impact of Highest Paid Receivers

I’m not touting Quinn. He was here for the GB debacle. My point isn’t hyping him up it’s referencing how bad Eberflus is.

I guess ask a question back your way. If Eberflus was so good why did Bears fire him and their unit got better?
Because he sucks as a HC.

BTW, why do you insist on putting words in my mouth? Sure makes your argument look weak. I've never said Eber was good.

If Eber is so bad as a DC, then why did INDY have a top 10 D 3 out of his 4 years there?

IMO, Eber is a middle of the pack DC. Not good, not terrible. That is what all the facts say.

Why is it so hard for you to see/admit that our players sucked?

Oh ok I’m misunderstanding your point then. You’ve been arguing with me about paying two receivers big money so I guess I lost your point somewhere.
Paying WRs big money puts you into a short window to compete for playoff wins, as when their cap hits start getting bigger, you have to release too many players to pay them.

BTW, this goes for all positions, not just WR. Paying Parsons 47 mil/per is absolutely ludicrous, and will cost them in the end. I would much rather have kept Parsons, but you just can't pay him that much.

Letting players walk to pay their QB and WRs and Hendrickson. One guy does not make a D, and they've done a poor job at talent acquisition.

OK, now, I've told YOU this over and over, so I'll try to address it different this time: Paying any positions huge salaries will be a detriment to your team. Right now in the NFL, WRs are receiving way more than they're worth, which is causing teams such as KC and Cincy and now the Eagles to have a major dropoff.

The Bengals D sucked because they let the guys walk who made it good(Reader, Ogunjobi) and haven't drafted well.

Is paying WRs big THE problem? No, but it's part of it.
Well I don’t disagree it’s part of the problem. My point is it’s not an excuse. Especially when you’re wasting 60 million on guys on defense.

But yes ultimately you have to draft better and teams haven’t.

To me Eagles regressed not because of paying their receivers. Their issues seem internal. Personnel wise they are stacked and still one of the best in the league.

Ok middle of the pack is a good DC to me. A bad DC can’t get his defense the middle of the pack IMO.

I didn’t put words in your mouth. I’m simply asking you questions based on what you’re saying. If you think I’m scapegoating Eberflus you clearly think he’s a good DC you just admitted here he’s middle of the pack.

As far as what he did in Indy….that’s years ago. There was a time I’d want Norv Turner to be my OC or Mike Martz. I think it’s possible for the game to pass guys by.

I’m of the belief in order to make it to the NFL you don’t “suck”. There’s level to how good players are but to me if you are the worst defense in the league it’s bigger than players. And it’s not like all of them suck. I feel with Osa, Clark, Quinnen, Bland, etc you should be better than 31st.

One of the talking heads (Cowherd maybe) was doing a comparison to how teams with the top 10 highest paid receivers fared. If I remember correctly only ONE (Philly) made the playoffs.

Thats a pretty telling statistic. I don’t see how we can have two of them on the same team, unless we want to be the Bengals.
It's just a cherry picked stat from this year.

Also, the 2 teams that made the SB had very cheap QBs. Is that also telling?

Bottom line... great teams go to the SB.

Great teams can have cheap WRs, or expensive WRs. So can bad teams.

Usually the common denominator amongst championship caliber teams is that they have great ownership, and great owners hire great GMs to run their team. Great GMs usually make a habit of constructing very competitive teams year in and year out... and there's more than one way to make a great team.

Bad GMs may try to copy what the good GMs do, but just like a bad chef trying to copy a good chef, you can usually telly the difference in the dish, or the team.

I think cause and effect has to be considered. The comparison doesn't mean there's a correlation, it simply means there were factors that kept those teams out of the playoff. Maybe paying a receiver top money was one of those factors, but I think you'd have to break down each team to get to the reasons that it happened.

I mean, go back to 2024 and the Eagles, the Lions and the Rams all had top-10 paid receivers and made the playoffs, and the Eagles won the Super Bowl.

Good point!
Take the 30m and spend it on defense.
That's what a smart front office would do.
My concern is Jerry will take the flashy option.

Man !
What a great post !!!!!!!
Great teams usually also have great coaching.

This threads about not paying Pickens are rationalizations at best, citing stats from all over the place, is not rocket surgery, tag him and play him, if he becomes a problem trade him.

But why in the Lord's name fans don't want a dominant playmaking player in the team? They talk about the Jones boys making stupid decisions, remember when they thought any WR could play alongside Mike Irvin, the likes of Jason Tucker, Billy Davis, Wayne MacGarity and Anthony Miller ring any bells?

What if CD is schemed out of the game? Or God forbid goes down for significant time?

You think you can beat playoff defenses like Seattle with one playmaking wideout and a traffic cone like Ferguson?

Hell, let's pay Jalen Tolbert instead and save a couple of bucks!
:hammer:

We seen how Pickens effected the games, especially when Lamb was out.
Defense let the team down, we all know this, but some refuse to admit it.

What if Lamb misses games again. As has has the past 2 years, though only missed a few games. 3 last year, 2 the year before.
Without Pickens, they have floury and Turpin and Mingo. And maybe a drafted later round pick.

They must keep Pickens, then focus everything else on defense. Bring in 4 or 5 FA players, draft 5 or 6. Keep some of their own.
With a better scheme and coaching, they improve to overall say, 20th. But that does not matter. As long by the end of the season they gel, and play like a top 12 to 15 team.

Which is what most fans want. Well, the fans that want them to win.

I feel he was set up to fail the moment Jerry got his feelings hurt and shipped Micah off to GB. Just personal opinion, not to be taken as a defense of Flub.

I would like to believe the defense looks much different in 2025 had Micah been kept on the roster, but we will never know.

You yahoos have been whining for years that the Cowboys don’t go out and get impact players. Now that they have, you want to get rid of them. Can’t make this crap up.

Most teams carry enough free cap space to afford a top WR so it’s not like they are gaining something other than free cap space by not having a top flight WR contract. Guaranteed all playoff teams have players who underperformed or over-performed relative to contract. Don’t suppose anyone would suggest trying to underpay or overpay as a model for running a team.

Who were the impact players who made a difference this past season? Pickens? Can't think of anyone else.

What is “ flash “ when Pickens goes deep catches contested balls or Lamb gets crushed over the middle still makes the catch . The # 2 offense wasn’t the problem in 25 it was the 32nd Defense and in the draft you have rookie contracts and a well placed FA or 2 to juice up this defense in 26 let’s take this chance

Think about it...history says having the highest paid WRs doesn't translate into SBs. So Dallas will have 2 of the highest paid WRs.

Makes perfect sense.
