Adam Schefter on Brandon Aubrey storyline

I believe if a team signs him, that 2nd round pick is in 2027 which sets up nicely. That will be a very deep draft class.

Nothing against Aubrey, and he's a great kicker.

But a part of me wants a 2nd round pick instead. I just don't see a team willing to do it.
I think they might.

They are dangling Bass and Aubrey for 2nd rounders without just doing an extension

Aubrey says he’s going to test the market

getting a second round pick for him is not out of the equation

It’s this year I’m pretty sure. I don’t see a team giving a 2nd and paying him 10 mil. But if they do I’ll take the 2nd. Aubrey is a great long range kicker. But he’s not top 5 in accuracy. I think he deserves the highest pay but not millions over highest pay

Yea, I think you are right. I got it mixed up with conditional picks. 2027 would be better though :muttley:

It will be cheaper to keep tagging him than pay him 10 million.
Correct me if I'm wrong but you only have so many tags each year and if you use it on him that could limit us on tagging guys like Pickens etc...when we need to delay contract negotiations.

This draft is deep at a few position we need. A really good safety could be gotten early second, LB too. I love Aubrey but the idea he’s the best kicker is overstated by many. Probably 10 guys had higher FG pct, many in the high 90’s. I love the idea he can bang thru a 60 yarder but I think we get conservative once we get in his range. Heck, nick folk has made 96% of his kicks over last 3 years and he’s 41

A contender that needs a kicker might do it. Take any good player over a late 2nd round pick any day. What's the expectation for a late 2nd round pick anyway? A solid starter if you're lucky.

Brandon is just trying to take care of his family after his NFL career is over. You want to talk about greed, let's bring Prescott into the conversation. If anyone in the NFL is overpaid AND over hyped that would be our lucky loser, the PAD DADDY!
....issue is he wants Elite money, not good kicker money. Good kicker money will set him and family in good spot.

As for greed and Dak complications. QB's get paid regardless. Rightly so, team goes far as they go.

Green Bay.

They lost in the playoffs due to their kicker. Playoff ready roster with not many holes.

Yep. And the day we lose games because we don’t have a kicker that can kick 60 yards is probably the day we have one of our better teams in recent memory. Chances are though are problems won’t be because of not having him.
to be fair, without a good FG kicker , seawhawks /patriots superbowl would have been 14-13 with pats having a chance...

I get it but without knowing the full context of what Aubrey is asking for it’s tough to really say for sure. For example if he wants longer deal (5+ years) $10m isn’t the end of the world as the cowboys can just backload the cap hits and have Aubrey making a reasonable amount, just keeping up with inflation.

The other part to this is Aubrey is about a point per game stronger than a league average kicker (possibly slightly more depending on how you do the math). An extra point per game average is tough to duplicate for $3m on the open market. This could be the play his agent is trying to make? If so it’s a good argument that kickers are undervalued….at least top end ones.
Except he is the top kicker in the NFL.

Gonna get paid mega $$$

How good have we been with second round picks? It's not a slam dunk. Meanwhile, we've had issues with finding a compentent kicker in the past. I don't like the dollar amount but we need to figure this out.

We’ve seen this before….we pay the kicker who is on an unbelievable tear, then he loses his mojo and becomes a liability…
This is why I trade him. Not worth it and he was far from automatic last season
