Cowboys will not tender Brock Hoffman

Not sure I understand this. We need a backup center to Beebe and don't really have one other than Hoffman. Bass has cross-trained at the position.

Maybe they have intel that Bass would be swooped up, but there's not a lot of interest in Hoffman.
It’s the cap

The Eagles are likely to attempt to extend Tyler Steen this offseason. Not sure they would pursue Hoffman. With Dickinson and Steen they may think they are set at guard.

Maybe he is a depth piece taken later in FA. Who knows? Is he a potential starter?
I think Washington would jump to sign him. He's better than Biadasz who they cut.

That’s very surprising. I thought Hoffman would have had enough value to net you something back in a trade. It may be more of a lets do whats best for the player at the expense of getting a 5th round pick back type of thing though.

Oh! Well this is a little surprising. He is a valuable player for them. Unless they think his replacement is already on the roster this is a little bit of a gamble. I did not see this coming. It will be interesting to see what happens. He will get offers.
I can't believe people even put him in the same conversation as Bass..Hoffman is savvy, but he's no TJ Bass. I always thought he was overrated myself.

What I love about the Hoff is his road to get here. The path less traveled. Dude had to fight and earn everything he has. Starting in highschool, then college. Now the NFL. The guy made himself a viable option in the NFL. Gritty dudes are hard to find in the NFL now. Not sure letting one possibly leave is the right move. Seems like we are dismissing him.

Exactly. IMHO he's a starter at center or guard on any team. I happen to think his best position is center. He's a mauler. Nasty. Not overly impressed with CB.

I see dudes doing the gritty in the NFL all the time?

:laugh:at people acting like he's a solid player. They aren't even putting a right of first refusal on him, which comes with no obligation whatsoever. It's not just other posters telling you he's a jag, not just PFF telling you he's a jag, it's the Cowboys' organization.
CZ always overrated him. I never understood it. At the same time, posters here generally underrated Bass.

In my mind, this is a great example of how this place just becomes an echo chamber of opinions instead of anyone doing any meaningful evaluations.

JAG is right.

I don’t think they are willing to pay $10+ million for two guys for depth. Simple as that

Cornelius and Nate Thomas are backups at LT
Bass will backup LG and RG
Nate Thomas is your backup RT
Bass can also play center

You have Bass, Thomas, Cornelius as depth.

Bass is the better technical player. Hoffmann is a good player but is expandable. But we recognize him more because he does more dirty work and gets physical after the play

The team is counting on Conor Riley to develop a couple of more young guys at a cheaper price.

Not sure if I would say he is better than Beebe, but I would agree that Beebe is a little overrated by the fan base and could be replaced. He seems to be a very average player with some limitations. Honestly I wouldn't have hated it if they tendered both Hoffman & Bass, let them battle for the starting C job this offseason and try to flip Beebe who could realistically bring you back a round 2 pick or be a legitimate chip in getting a Maxx Crosby deal done if they wanted a splash move this offseason.

That would give you a starting Center + a quality backup at all 3 interior spots for $10m or less + most likely at least a round 2 pick coming back. It's the type of aggressive move I would love to see the Cowboys roll the dice on, and the IOL seems to be the place they are set up to do it unless they are serious about bumping Smith out to LT.

Hoff will no doubt play somewhere else in the division soon, much to my dismay.

Beebe is overrated by fans. He’s not a problem we need to address but I can imagine moving on from him when his rookie deal is done.

Agreed. Hes not a bad player, but not really a great one either. Hes fine as a starter, but the Cowboys have other in house options that I doubt you see much if any drop off with. Seem like the perfect player to cash out on early for a higher pick instead of waiting on the eventual comp pick.
