105.3 the fan: Do teams really want Pickens?

Until we are mathematically eliminated Jerry believes we can win the SB, bless his heart.
Is that not the way all fans should be?
Imagine being so miserable every yer going into the season, we suck, we won't win a game.

I know that is what some want, or seem to want.
But it is the truth, all teams have chance until mathematically eliminated.

jazz I think there is a huge difference between someone thinking about winning a super bowl and another thinking the team cannot win a game. Neither is very realistic IMO.

Yup.

I think we are stuck with him.
Good, this is great. The team needs him.
No team wanted him last season, when he was cheap.
Not true. Other teams had slightly better offers. Pickens wanted traded and to come to Dallas. The Steelers out of respect for him, obliged him.
This no team wanted him is BS.
And the Detroit game was terrible for him.
Wow, 1 bad game. What about Lambs 4 drops against the Eagles, and drops in other games.

I've been saying from the beginning, he will get them no more than a 2nd round pick. Now, with the contract Seattle gave to their WR it might be only a 3rd round pick for Pickens. Still, from Dallas's standpoint, getting back the 3rd they gave up for him would mean they paid a 5th for him for 1 year. That's not terrible.

But they don't have to trade him. They can squeeze him under the CAP and get another year out of him. If he plays at a high level again, they can franchise him again next year and still trade him. Perhaps with too good years in him teams will be willing to trade for him.

nobody wants to invest anywhere near $40 million in Pickens. They don't see him up their with JSN and they don't trust him.
which is logical. fans that act as though player behavior & consistency doesn't influence teams level of interest are funny.

repeat last year's performance and reliability
It bears reminding folks that he had a stretch of games where he was really good but he also had stretches where he was pretty average or even below average. Seems some fans only remember the really good stretch & are somewhat over valuing his entire season. Potential suitors are looking at the entirety.

Todd Archer reported he was fined multiple times last year. You dont get fined for being well behaved.
True, but I'm sure a lot of players get fined but slide under the radar until they become a focal point for a media topic at some point.

Lamb for example was also fined multiple times last year, but he's not in a contract year.

To be clear, I'm definitely not disagreeing with what you are saying nor am I suggesting it does not matter, because it does.

I'm just pointing out it happens a lot more than we fans realize because we tend to only hear about it when a player is in the news for something unrelated.

No, it doesn't.

You lose the player and then have to spend and/or give up significant draft capital. Plus, you're getting a worse player in the short term.

It is a pointless strategy that hurts you in both the short and long term.
You don't seem willing to look at the other side of the coin. The team controls the player and keeps the player motivated vs giving them a huge contract which then controls the team while the player phones it in. Which we have certainly seen in Dallas.
There isn't anything keeping the team from trading him during the period they control him. At any rate, the replacement doesn't have to cost anywhere near what Pickens would be costing you. It's almost like the league came up with this option for situations where a team has concerns about a player and doesn't want to create a long term commitment.

The other side of the coin is dumb, all it does is give the player more leverage. What if Pickens decides to hold out in training camp like Micah did?

The replacement won't cost as much because he won't be as good of a player.

they aren't dumb. just as valid as your points. you act as though he is a model player and there are zero concerns to even consider. a player under the tag has little to no leverage.

and that is written in stone? no team has ever drafted a rookie WR that has been productive? (for $30-$40 million less)
why do you HAVE to have 2 top level receivers anyway? why can't someone else just be a viable compliment to the guy you are already paying as your #1.

Did any of the conference championship game teams this past season have two such WR's? No. You could argue that NE had zero.

Just because Pickens can be a good player doesn't mean he has to be a part of this team or that any team should hand him everything he wants.

Who? Link please.
I remember this also. I don’t they they reported which teams but there were some slightly better options due Pittsburgh but they did Pickens a favor by sending him to the team he preferred to go to.

It came out last year after the trade. I am not going to look for any links. Take my word for it or not. I do not care.
One place I did see it, was from article from an avid Steelers fan, from a local writer in Pittsburgh. She had it on her phone as we read it.
Again this was almost a year ago.

A lot of teams would like to have him.

None of them want to commit to him.

There may or may not be another team to be interested in Pickens but not too likely one that would seriously consider paying him in the monetary area that Dallas would. There's likely a team with real interest in him, but it might involve a trade that the Cowboys could consider.

They are dumb because they are completely shortsighted. Tagging him this year and next is the same cap dollar overpay as the potential dead hit if you walk away.

Drafting a rookie WR in the first round is not only still costly against the cap but you ALSO have to factor in the opportunity cost of using premium draft capital on a WR. That means not using it on Edge, CB, OT, or whatever other hole is inthe lineup. Not to mention the fact that a first-round receiver is hardly a guarantee.

You don't have to do anything. That doesn't mean that offloading talent for no reason is a good idea.

Never said hand him "anything he wants." That type of exaggerated commentary is why these arguments are so stupid. They have to go to the absolute extreme to try to make a point.

I don't have the final answer and am not arrogant to pretend I do but since I remembered it different I did try and refresh my memory.

So far we don't have a ton of evidence but what we do have is your memory of glancing at a friends phone almost a year ago, my memory of not hearing anything about that, and an article published in the Sporting News reporting on an article published by the Athletic.

Your memory
My memory
The writings of professional sports reporters.

I'm probably just not fanning right, though.
