Signing Pickens to a new deal would lower his cap hit for this season even if the new contract was $40 million. The first year would be $20 million at the most vs $28 million on the tag. And they could add void years to make a 3 year deal essentially a 6 year deal to keep the cap hits low.

It’s not in the cap hit. It’s in the accounting. The cap hit under the tag for this year would be higher but no dead money later. Less dollars is less dollars.

The Cowboys FO is way more worried about cap hits and “winning” contract negotiations than winning playoff games.

If being “financially responsible” at all times is your annual goal you should never buy a professional sports team. Every player is of course overpaid. That’s the nature of the sport.

It's funny that no matter what the situation, people still claim we have a ton of cap space. We have made several moves just to get some room to sign cheap FAs and our 1st round picks. I haven't looked, but I doubt if we have much left at all right now.

I don't believe they do. Let's look it up: According to what I'm seeing, we currently have 14 mil in cap space. Draft picks will cost us 8 mil or so. That means we have around 6 mil in cap space.

Not sure how that equates to us having the room no matter what. Did you mean to say we can create the room?

You don’t need anymore cap space to sign Pickens, at least for this year. Your figures already include his $27.3 mil cap hit. By signing a long term deal, this years cap hit would more than likely be less then $20 mill, reducing the cap hit for this year and gaining cap space for this year. However, this doesn’t account for cap issues in future years. You’re just pushing money forward that will still need to be accounted for whether he’s still on the team or not.

but isnt it just Jerry being stupid? Isnt this all because Jerry isnt proactive and he just likes to wait? Are you saying their are other factors that is causing the situation to play out a bit?

I mean it seems like all teams have issues like this when players exceed expectations.

Is it Jerry's fault Pickens got over 1400 yards and an all-pro bid? Or are those just facts that raise a player's price tag and make team friendly deals?

Once CD got hurt and Pickens balled out, it's highly unlikely his agent would advise him take a team friendly deal.

That's not only unrealistic, it's clearly bad business on the player/agent side.

This is one we'll have to get the popcorn out and see how it goes.

The most irresponsible teams on cap management like the rams, the eagles, and others are polishing their recent Lombardi trophies while “enduring” a year or two of cap hell followed by a rebuilt roster that competes.

This is what the teams winning SBs lately have been doing. There is no team in the NFL more worried about the salary cap and being in “cap hell” than the Cowboys.

And that has worked out so well for us in the last three decades….geez.

Most super bowl teams are in cap hell for a few years after contention ends. Nature of the beast.

If Jerry truly wants to win as several love to claim, then he will push everything into year 4 and 5 and acquire the difference makers. Of course, Jerry thinks the difference makers are CBs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Only 5 teams have won the Super Bowl the last 10 years. That leaves 27 that that haven’t. Still doesn’t forgive the FO though.

They have always had the room. I don't need to look it up yet again. Anytime the Cowboys need room they just have to redo a deal or two. All their deals and written this way and have been for years.

One reason I NEVER understand the panic the day before FA. We have no room! We have no room!!! That's the cry the chicken little's. Wrong.

That is plenty of space, especially since they can restructure QW and extend pickens to free up more.
