Cowboys have called to inquire about LB Brooks

Agreed Probably zero actual value but good roster maneuvering to take a decent athlete in Marist and let him play in Miami if we’re gonna move on
Ah, he's cheap. I'd rather see if he can step up and serve as depth here than just throw him in when he doesn't sweeten the deal.

Issue is data can be provided to show that mid to late round draft picks have a low probability of hitting, especially year 1. It would take a haul for me to move a 1st rounder, but after that I'd be all for cashing in picks for players that can help me today. If were not in win now mode it's pointless to have a QB in his mid 30s.
And I think Dallas has shown that this is the primary way it is willing to bring in quality outside players, through trades.

Anything other than the first-rounders would be negotiable for me, knowing that this is one of the few ways we add quality. And as I've mentioned, if Miami wanted to move up in the first and was willing to give us Brooks in a package that includes No. 20 for No. 30, I'd go for that. If we had to throw in a later-round pick to get it done, I'd also be OK with that.

Why not call their bluff and wait until after the draft ............his value then goes to zero coz he's a 2027 free agent.

The more I think about ....I'll offer a this year 3rd rounder or a conditional 2027 3rd. That's it ..........coz w/o a new deal, my leverage is behind the eight ball.
That's completely untrue. Even at the trade deadline he probably gets them a 3rd at a minimum. Since a 3rd this year is worth more than a 3rd next year, his value with regards to what picks you need to give back could be lower before the draft or on draft day than after the draft. If they don't trade him before the season they may just play out the string and take their comp pick or maybe they hit a homerun on a bunch of draft picks and end up re-signing/extending him.

Also, if we go into the draft with Brooks we don't need to force LBer if it isn't there. We have no playable MIKE right now. Now is the time.

The hit rate (depending on what you consider a hit) is less than 50 percent. You might end up with an Odighizuwa (starter-quality), but you also might just get a Chauncey Golston (rotational contributor) or Nashson Wright (a bust here).

Or if we look at the linebackers, you might get an Overshown but you also might get a Liufau.
Agreed and thats a risk I'd be fine with avoiding and getting a veteran in here. I havent looked at the most recent data, but as of a couple years ago it was around 10% of 3rd round players will ever make a pro bowl in their careers. That may have gone up recently with how many players drop out, but probably not too drastically. Plus a guy like Brooks even if he's a 1 year rental you have a realistic shot of getting a comp pick coming back your way.

The 3rd round is probably ideal for the team trading away if they are truly a contender IMO. You may only get a starting caliber player once every 5ish picks in the round, but its still a high enough pick to potentially land a stud player that teams will be willing to actually pay decent value for.

So you want to give up the farm for a player in the last year of his contract.

I do not blame the FO for not giving into your poor GM thoughts.
There is a gap the size of the Grand Canyon between offering a 5th for a guy like Brooks (which is moronic and not going to get the player) and "giving up the farm".
What drives the price for a player is generally his talent of course and how his talent compares to his contract (and of course the direction and needs of both teams but that's more specific). Brooks is an All Pro $8M for one year. That's a pretty sweet deal for any team that trades for him. I'm surprised there is talk of just having to give up a 3rd for him. If I'm Miami I want more.

Why do we want a veteran linebacker that doesn't make defensive calls? He nor overshown called a defense last year
I would assume if we're truly interested in trading for him that that is not a concern for Parker. I think he's just worried about having inside linebackers who are worth putting on the field.

Give us your first-team All-Pro for a fifth. Yeah, that should go over well. Are you related to the cheapskates running this show?
He is the final year of his contract which lessens his trade value. Whoever signs him is going to have probably make him the highest paid LB in the NFL.

Really.

No more than this or other posts against it.

Sounds like typical cowboy team building to me. Putting square pegs in round holes

Yeah, the numbers are quite low. I can't remember if less than 50 percent is based on players becoming a starter or getting a second contract or what. We want every third-rounder for us to be Jason Witten or DeMarco Murray, but just as many of them turn out to be Jason Williams or Jalen Tolbert.

Could be. I'd assume that our new DC would want the trade if we made it. Of course, he may have wanted Dean or Walker or Lloyd more and is willing to "settle," or he may just want any veteran other than what we've got.

Yeah, I went with a third and fifth as the highest I would go outside of some kind of swap involving 20 and 30. I hate giving up the extra pick, but truth is that you're more likely to find a miss or role player than a star at that point. Of course, our fans fantasize about every pick being a superstar and think they are all more valuable than a proven NFL player.
Yeah sorry when I said high as a 3rd I meant as high of a pick as I’d go. I’d go a 3 and a 5 too. If they resign him I’d do a 3 and a 4.

Yeah I’m convince fans just want to see us on tv on draft day. I’d trade all those picks if it meant we got good players.

Yes, Really! Take a step back and stop being stubborn and arguing the comment/idea wasn't dumb and think about it for a second. The internet is full of people more interested in arguing that they weren't wrong about what they said in the past than thinking about it rationally and admitting they were probably wrong.

They might get a 3rd if he leaves via free agency but at a minimum get a 4th. They save only like $2.6M by trading him before 6/1, but if they wait, they don't get to make that draft pick until the next year. He was an All Pro just last year who led the NFL with 183 tackles and also has seasons of 184 and 161 tackles in the past. As a comparison, our leading tackler had 91 tackles and the years before that had 138, 109, 101 and 101. He is only 28 and could end up being resigned if he stays all year. Why would they trade him for a 5th? Why? From our perspective, he is a huge bargain for Dallas at his 2026 cap hit and we might even extend him if we trade for him or at a minimum can sign him before he becomes a free agent if we don't also draft an ILBer this year. Most important we have no one to play that spot. No one. Our run defense has been horrendous. This flat out a huge, perfect fit for us. This also allows us to go BPA in the draft and not have to force ILBer and make no mistake about it we need a starting ILBer.

Yeah giving up a 3rd round pick for an established quality player at LB isn't a bad exchange at all. The hit rates on 3rd round picks isn't great and the Cowboys need players who impact the game in 2026. Brooks does that. In the 3rd round you're likely getting a developmental player or someone who dropped due to injury concerns (Overshown/Revel). Neither is very likely to help in 2026 unless you're drafting for a safer position like RB which likely isnt the case this season.

If this team was truly in a rebuilding year I'd say keep the 3rd, but they need a reliable LB. I wish they would have been more aggressive in FA to get a LB and then just kept the pick, but what's done is done.
I think they’d have to get a contract extension done.

3 years, $33 million seems fair in my opinion.

Not this year. His cost is a very palatable $8 million. Then you can tag him next year.

That's why I think his trade value is a second. He's a first-team All-Pro, has led the league in solo tackles twice, broke Seattle's franchise record for most tackles in a season, became only the fifth NFL player since 2000 to have 800 tackles in his first six NFL seasons and is relatively cheap this year at $8 million.

Now, I don't know if Miami can get a second, but it may be willing to settle for a third and some change. But this isn't some chump they just have to get rid of. Again, his cap hit is reasonable for them, and they stand to get a decent comp pick if he leaves in free agency next year. The only reason he's a trade possibility is because they are rebuilding and want draft capital over a player on his final year.

A fifth-round pick isn't draft capital, it's a dart throw.

Anyone familiar with his game? I saw a few Dolphins games and never saw him flash to the point he was an all pro. How many of you guys want him just so you can say we have a all pro at linebacker?
