Overton will be the 5t in the 3-4. Osa could play that, but he’s a true 4-3 3T. You don’t ideally want to pay good money to a natural 4-3 3T then make him a 3-4 end with less upfield responsibilities.

Jerry is really oversimplifying it but Overton has the chops to be a true 5t so in theory he’s a better fit for the scheme. But who knows if he’ll actually pan out to being better. On paper it’s the ideal positional match though.

Our base defense is going to be 4-2-5

I listened to Jerry talk about Overton and Osa and it was just classic "Jerry speak". I think the Cowboys just wanted a 3rd for Osa. It had less to do with scheme fit and/or affording him.

Cowboys screwed Osa. Apparently Washington was going to offer him more but the Cowboys pitched Texas tax breaks. Then less than a year later they traded him to one of the highest tax brackets in the country.

It was a lot of money committed to DT, but think Osa was better than he got credit for with his pressures. He just didn't show up with a lot of splash plays and was probably viewed as the 3rd best DT/DE in the system. Good player, but again was closer to Maliek Collins than a top end DT.

We'll see about Overton, he may be a little light to play dline in a 3-4 but it will definitely be one of the camp battles to watch.
