Saban on hot mic calling MLaw a reach

Goat in coollege. A JAG coach in the NFL
People might have said thing about Jimmy Johnson who was 8-24 after his first 2 season. The difference between Nick and Jimmy is Troy Aikman. Saban gave up NFL coaching bc he clearly saw that he could not win without a QB in the NFL and he had no means of acquiring one. The final straw was when he had talked Drew Brees into signing with Miami only to be overruled by the GM bc of the concerns of medical staff. Had Saban gotten his guy, no reason he couldn't have at least done what Sean Payton did with Brees.

But to dispute his coaching acumen is laughable. Saban had a shrewd eye for talent and built that Bama juggernaut with it.

Wasn’t the medical guy they had Danny Kanell’s father?

Yeah if not for those pesky superbowls.

I remember when everyone call fredbeard a reach
He was a reach and a poor draft value. The thing Jerry never understood about the draft is that you have to maximize the value of the draft picks. Jerry has never been good at reading other teams and what they were likely to do, bc he doesn't really follow the NFL like a real GM. He has gone into every draft with tunnel vision solely focused on what he wanted.

Fredboard is a perfect example. Centers are rarely ever taken in round 1 , and the next one after travis was in round 4. There was no demand for the position that year. So, odds are we could have had Kwan Short in round 1 AND travis in round 2, instead of Travis and Gavin Escobar.

Oh so you're trolling. How cute. Nobody called him a bad coach troll. Said he doesn't know how to scout nfl players. Can you dispute that or just troll and giggle?
Somebody above called him a JAG. You should read before commenting. You would look smarter.

Heard 4 teams wanted him.

Heck that’s who I wanted.

Hes a Khalil Mack starter kit.

The tape is pretty good & the athleticism is off the charts.

If you can’t coach this guy up to be decent then you suck at your job.
Tend to agree and I’ve certainly been as skeptical as anyone about our drafting esp past few years but I was absolutely fine with this pick. Reminds me of Ware. Tools are obviously there, will they put it all together who knows but entire draft is a crapshoot, at least his athleticism and tape are really good. Only other players I liked where we picked him, and we did move down and get extra, was the CB from SDSU or Faulk. We will see who turns out the best.

He doesn’t know it all. How would he if he was not coaching him last year.
Exactly, everybody thinks these talking heads know everything because they used to play or coach but they just watched some guy play once or twice or watched a couple of YouTube clips and they make snap judgements. They're spread way too thin to know everything about every team.

Nick Saban isn't scouting draft picks and putting together his own board. He hears a name, looks at Kiper's board, and makes a comment. He has no idea what players were rising in scout's minds, which were dropping, etc. The reality is if the draft were two weeks later the consensus board would have caught up with what everyone was hearing--ie, that Lawrence was a 1st round pick.

I mean seriously, what does frigging Saban know about scouting defensive talent, ahem Downs, anyway...
Just another hater I tell ya.

And uh yeah, this is called extreme sarcasm.

Then he couldn’t hack it when the current model of CFB resembles more of the pro game. The ability to move to a different school or get paid for your likeness.

The guy is the biggest hypocrite

So much agonizing parsing of every word from “experts”. It’s just an indication of how obsessed fans and the industry media are about this stuff.

Well let it play out. Trying to justify a pick at this point, after the fact, is pointless.
