Bain, Allen and Scott. Less versatile group overall, but still fills the same three needs that we did in real life.

I do prefer what we did though. Love Downs - a lot more than I liked Bain (though I am a fan of his too).

The guys on 105.3 said that if we hadn't drafted Downs with the 1st pick, then Chris Johnson would've been the pick at 20/23.

We got the best player in the draft who instantly upgrades our run defense.

I can't wait to see Downs and Overshown on the field at the same time.

I was kind of hoping Mesidor fell to us but he was taken just prior to the pick. Really hard to complain about the first three picks. Really would have been nice to have had a second round pick, lot of good players would have been available.

Just saw an article that reported that the Dolphins would have picked Kaleb Proctor at 11 even without the trade down. Hndsight is 20/20 but I am glad we made the trade to secure one the best players in the draft and who will improve this defense.

They could have had Mesidor at 20. They didn't want him. Malachi Lawrence was their guy and if he was taken then CJ Allen would have been the pick.

I think Bain could have been our Charles Haley. An intimidating pass rush presence off the edge. A nasty enforcer.

It's why I would have selected him over Downs, another stud but at a less impactful position.

I get it though with the history on arm length. He has to be the outlier. You don’t have to worry about that with Downs. He is safer.

But the best pick to me on Day 1 wasn't Downs to Dallas. It was Bain to Tampa Bay.

Have to watch it on YouTube but if you click the link, at the 15:40 mark of the video Robert Belt claims the Cowboys were considering two players at 23: Lawrence and C.J. Allen.

If you can believe Broaddus and Belt, what turned out to be Downs and Lawrence could have been Bain and Allen.

Not that it would be an improvement over what we ended up with. I just find the what could have been randomness of the draft fascinating. If it was Bain and Allen does that mean no Barham in the 3rd? Was there another player there with a similar grade or was he the stand alone BPA? Could they have gone Shelton instead? Then that changes the pick at 112. I love this stuff.

Would have preferred it.

I was thinking Scott too but these reports about Shelton lead me to believe he might have been your 3rd round pick.

I hope the Cowboys haven’t “missed” on scouting Shelton. Cowboys seem super high on him and when that happens they usually hit. But lots of people don’t really like this pick.

If you only knew with certainty that Down would be there at 12, all of a sudden you save salary cap room by staying at 12 AND adding two more 5th rounders to this draft class. But that was a very reasonable move for the Cowboys at the time.
