Bob Sturm's film breakdown on Michael Triggs

UDFA. So it is not like we used anything to get him

Nuts, if he just sticks this season even on the Practice Squad its a plus

Obviously he has the potential to be an excellent starter; it all comes down to how much he wants it and how hard he is willing to work

There'll be a lot of interesting camp battles in preseason mostly on defense lot of new bodies a lot of people gotta earn their spot but yes don't leave out Fairweather 'cause I think he was better in camp than most of the others he was playing with not our starters but I was shocked that he didn't get much time in the real games because he impressed me..

Yeah add him to the room full of guys who are gonna be competing and somehow I don't see how Schoonmaker's making another roster unless he's just improves a lot.. Could be the other guys like Fairweather Fant and I believe there was one more that were on the lower end of the depth chart that could be out along with Scoot Maker and make room for the depth chart being Ferguson Ford and maybe this guy or fairweather.
Fairweather was plucked from the PS last year. He is not on the team.

Ferguson, Schoonmaker, Spann-Ford, Fant, Trigg, Rogers. On the roster.

It only makes sense that you have to be a fairly unimpressive blocker to go undrafted when you have that kind of receiving ability. But is it blocking alone, or did the maturity concerns figure into the equation substantially? Conventional wisdom says he makes the team if he's able to play special teams.
There are very, very, few TEs that are great at both blocking and receiving. Kittle is the only one that readily comes to mind .

Jake is actually good at both as well.

I do think because Ferguson can block and Spann-Ford is a big-time blocker that if Trigg shows a different skillset as a receiving tight end, he could make this roster, especially since we'll also carry Luepke as a fullback. That simply means that Trigg has to be much better than Schoonmaker at something and Schoonmaker hasn't established himself as much of a receiving threat (and not a better blocker than Spann-Ford as the No. 2 tight end).

Disagree. Disagree strongly.

Maybe that would've happened under McCarthy.

Not under a run-first head coach who walks the talk like Schotty has walked that talk. TE must be an adequate blocker in this scheme. Only alternative would be to cast him as a big WR... but yeah, that's a big WR at 240 lbs.
His roster bonus says he'll make the team. We have a pretty reliable reputation for keeping the UDFAs with larger bonuses.

Jay Novacek got rag dolled trying to block
Got in the way enough to let Emmitt "be effective" /s

....but he moved the chains, made def opponents pik their poison....

A coach like Sean Peyton would dream of mismatches he could create with Trigg...in time

Eh,
It just seemed like there was an oversaturation of these undersized 6'3, 6'4 TEs this draft. Many ran sub 4.5, 4.6. Think it was just as much a lost in the mix where every little thing could push you down!

I fully subscribe to your assertion. He walks in the door as the odds-on-favorite UDFA of all those in the pool of UDFAs to make the team.

And still.

Two things can be true at the same time.

Nay, three.

1. Odds-on-favorite. Sure.

2. And. TE must be an adequate blocker in this scheme.

3. And. This is not Mike McCarthy's roster management anymore. It's a legit we-must-run-the-ball scheme.

Reactions: CWR
A headcase tight end who can't block and went undrafted.

Didn't we already do Rico Gaithers?

I love the opinions of the “fan” scouts. If someone had listened the Cowboys would have at least 29 more championships.

Eagles drafted a TE who never blocked in College in the 2nd rd.

Can the coaching staff get his blocking up to the level of Schoon?

Because when it comes to route running, catching ability and making impact plays it sure seems like it is Trigg > Schoon.
That shouldn't be too difficult

DJ Roges same position with practically the same contract.
When teams cut players and take dead cap hits in the millions I don't really think they put a lot of relevance into releasing UDFA with 200k guaranteed and 30k signing bonus!

Agreed. Obviously the team has/had high hopes for him, and may give him some extra credit while deciding the roster, but when now some teams are eating 7-8 figure dead cap hits now, 200-300k is peanuts on a 300 mil cap

Ah that makes a lot of sense now I was wondering he did so well in the preseason that how how come they didn't bring him up or talk about him.. I hope it's not one that got away I really thought he had something in preseason..

I'm assuming the name Rogers that I don't know of must be the TCU guy the undrafted free agent or whatever?
