Video: 3 minutes of Emmitt Smith highlights

I had posted in the History Forum recently perhaps the most incredible NFL record that Emmitt holds.

Emmitt Smith is the only player in NFL history to have gained over 1000 first downs. No other player has even 800, let alone over 1000.

 .... Debatable
Not debatable at all. Emmitt holds all the major records. He's the Jerry Rice of RBs. Hell, he's arguably beyond that (see the 1000+ first downs NFL record above).

And before you say, "if Barry didn't retire..." that is a what if argument that you can't know how it turns out. Perhaps Barry gets injured and has to retire the very next game.

Also, Barry couldn't touch Emmitt when it came to scoring TDs, catching the ball, and blocking.

This Youtube video does an excellent job of covering the staggering stats that Emmitt achieved during his career. This is where I found out about the 1000+ first downs, but there are other mind blowing numbers such as percentages of various offensive stats of the Cowboys that Emmitt was responsible for.

Quite frankly, Emmitt is the most dominant RB there has ever been and it ain't even close. There's no legit counter argument. You can't pick any RB from any era and at any level, not even Barry Sanders or Sweetness, that can come close to what's shown in this video:

Like I said it's debatable

Emmitt holds all major records because he spent the last four or five years of his career padding his stats. He made no secrets his goal was to break Walter Payton's record. He didn't care much about winning as getting the record.
That's where he lost me a little bit. Also one of the reasons why Bill Parcell didn't want him to play for him. So as far as him holding all the major records I give you that but not the best pure running back.

IIRC, that Vikings game was right after Sweetness died. Emmitt had an NFL single-game rushing record pace, but broke his finger in that guy's helmet in the first run shown.
Yes I remember the game I remember the injury I don't believe he came out in the second half but yes he was on a record pace but that's how you live and die with the straight arm He did that a lot to gain more yardage and this time he got his fingers stuck in a helmet...

In hindsight he probably should have just went down got back up and continued his dominance but it's kind of how he played he liked that stiff arm..

Look I'm sorry but saying you didn't want to win is ridiculous he was just in a non winning situation towards the end and why not after a long career and longevity is part of the game availability sometimes is better than this alleged pure running back you're speaking of..

A lot of them don't last long look at what happened to Zeke It takes a lot to get through what he did so if you want to call him a stat pattern call the other guys that have been playing how about Peyton Manning and Drew Brees and right now Aaron Rodgers I mean these guys played 19 years,, I know it's a different position but that's my point But Jerry Rice how many teams did he play for gaining on that all time receiving record isn't that the same thing jerry Rice was never the fastest but he always showed up and he always had highlights like this because he could..

It is very difficult to last that long in the NFL... But I want to hear about stat padding because we have guys right now that played for us in games against weak teams when they were trying to get a sack kind of injured and tired but begging his way back in that was Parsons there are guys like that all over gaining stats against weaker teams in weaker moments that is just how it goes..

Look at the man's career he's the top five all time running back and I don't care how pure You think he is he was a three down back that makes him one of the purest I don't care if he didn't have natural speed and the kind of wiggle a stop and go speed like say Gibbs That's the whole point emmitt Smith did this with less athleticism Less speed than some of these other pure runners you speak of.

He deserved the record because he lasted to that point...

Do this all day because if you reply with more than nonsense, I will start picking out all the other all-time players that play too long and then we can take away their stats, lmao..

He had a right to get the record and it does not take the shine off of his career no more than Witten trying to come back when he shouldn't have they all deserve it because they were great and they get to go out on their own free will not a fan's opinion..

Any player that can play that long come up with all those rings all those yards and do it for as long as he did as a three down back Let's stop acting like they pulled him off the field all the time we can go over guys that did that that had all this speed and that build up a lot of stats really fast and faded..

Take the guy that can be steady and consistent for almost his entire career..

I just did a quick check by the way because I was just remembering Frank Gore what did he do his last 5 seasons really He didn't do much he wasn't winning So what was he doing how'd he get that far up the list to challenge Emmett oh that's right longevity He stayed in the league a really long time just stat padding..

Are we gonna take away Frank Gore's numbers that now have him 3rd all time in yardage leaders in the NFL because he did the same thing he just didn't get it but he was staying around a long time because what was his goal Oh I remember him stating that he was really chasing Emmitt Smith's numbers..

That means we need to go through and breakdown every player in every category in every position that lasted a long time and how they ended up with all these numbers..

Say there's no need to do that because it's just the way it goes you can stay as long as you want It's not stat padding it's you ending your career with whatever numbers you have.

It's everyone's personal choice they want to hang around the league really long time or they want to bow out early..
