More hype Downs or Barham

He was a 3rd round pick.

3-92 Jaishawn Barham

The LBs taken before him:

1-5 Arvell Reese
1-7 Sonny Styles
2-43 Jacob Rodriguez
2-46 Josiah Trotter
2-51 Jake Golday
2-53 CJ Allen
2-60 Anthony Hill

The next LB after him was his teammate

4-118 Jimmy Rolder
I expect all those guys to be good players too. Good list of linebackers. This was the draft to fix your linebacking group. I hope they did.

These two rookies are being talked about seemingly everyday. Can they both live up to the expectations given to them by the fans and organization?? Every time I look somewhere it was Downs, now it's more so Barham, I hope they're ready to go. Who you got!!
You forgot about Lawrence!

i hope they both have several all pro seasons in dallas. fingers crossed.

Downs - I don't remember another Cowboys draft pick being so highly touted as a readymade piece. Zeke was seen that way pretty much unanimously but the Downs talk trumps even that, I think. A lot of people are saying he'll be the coach on the field for the defense I've never heard of that for a rookie, not on defense.

Yeah no rookie we've drafted had the reputation Downs has. To be calling Sabans defense as a true freshman is something. I know its hype, but I don't doubt his football intelligence.

You are better than this Coog.

I don't see any hype on Downs. He was a legit top 4-5 player in this draft.

The truth is when he walks on the field, the defense is automatically much improved over last year.
Hasn't played a down for us yet. That's the definition of hype.

It’s too bad that safety is a position that many people don’t know how to evaluate. I imagine without a bunch of interceptions or a tackle total less than 130, people will get on him

Personally, I really only get on safeties for being out of position or taking bad angles.

Agreed

Like I said, it’s hard for many fans to evaluate. That type of thing because it requires you to know what you’re seeing and it doesn’t show on the stat sheets

This doesn't make sense to me...

Seems pretty clear.

Look at it this way

Imagine what a safety winning rookie of the year would look like?

Now imagine an edge or a CB.

Identifying a standout safety is objectively more difficult

I’m just glad that safety play is coming back in the league. Like tight ends, we’re going to see a trend toward maintaining three quality players at both positions.

What I don't understand is why would it be more difficult for fans to evaluate the position. How is it objectively more difficult?...as you say.

Edge = sacks
CB = interceptions
LB = tackles
S = ?

That’s simplifying it but safeties are more all around contributors and while tackles and interceptions are reasonable measurements, it’s not as obvious as it is with other positions.

Downs for instance could very effective, playing all three downs, running the sets and calls for all five DBs, but if he doesn’t also have a bunch of interceptions, some fans will be critical.
