This is common conception, But have you ever stopped and asked why?

How many teams are truly in “throw away future assets to win now” mode? 5? Less? So that can’t be the reason 1 first rounder is worth considerably less than another.

The entire reason that philosophy started is because GM’s and HC’s need talent infusions now to keep their jobs. Theres no other process to hold fast to that mindset of devaluing your team’s future. A GM like Jerry or Howie who knows beyond reasonable doubt he will be employed in 2028 can take advantage of the GM’s who don’t know that. Today do you look back and think about how much more valuable your 2020 1st was than your 2021 1st? The idea serves a specific purpose that some teams are exempt from.

Yeah the cess pool of an organization. That turned him into a super star -- his own words. And got him a ring. Meanwhile Dak and Cee Dee are doing what for the Cowboys???

They didn’t win anything last season. They wouldn’t this season if the didn’t make some significant change.

Good post. I disagree with it but respect the point of view and think you make an interesting point about established GMs who dont have to worry about getting fired having an advantage.

Still I think picks now naturally carry more value than future picks. You kinda see this in most trades where a team may give up a future 2nd to get a 3rd rounder for the current years draft. The longer you have to wait for a return on your investment the more you need to make it worthwhile. I’m sure every team in football would trade a 2028 1st rounder for a 2027 1st

But I’d counter that and say you won’t find too many teams happy to throw away their 2028 1st for a 2nd rounder

You're overthinking it.

The market is the market. It less valuable bc you can trade it for less.You're not taking advantage of anyone. If you keep it and make the pick then obviously it's still a 1rd pick, but if you tried to trade it today you wouldn't get the return of a 2027 1rd.

The Eagles take a $17 million cap hit in 2026 and a $27 million cap hit in 2027 in deference to the AJ Brown contract. What is lost in the conversation is they are out from under $133 million in future cap commitments in deference to AJ Brown’s contract. And have three firsts over the next two drafts.

Putting Roseman in this scenario is like giving pistols to Dillinger.
