I think accepting that you are still driven to play, even though you know your better years (and better teams!) are behind you *is* admirable, if someone will have you. The "don't ever quit" served him well for a long time.
I think "going out at the very top of your game"...might be a tad cowardly and a little quit in ya. Git while people still love you and your stats? I do respect people that do it for health and family...for sure
Like an old musician...might not be prime but if people keep coming to your shows, then keep going until they don't. There's no shame in that. Hold your fire as long as it's lit.
