Caution: tl:dr
Tweets do not always provide full context (or full quotations for that matter), so I am pasting Dak Prescott's full statement in his own words (video starts at 14:04 mark/statement ends at 15:11 mark |
67 seconds):
This is my point also. Starting quarterbacks and defensive tackles are important parts of the team, but they are only cogs of the whole machine.
In my opinion, Prescott could have instead said, "I'll
help get you to the playoffs, but I'm going to need you to go help us win it." The inclusion of one word would have equalized the responsibilities of both men. It frames future outcomes properly. Hypothetical situations:
A) Dallas' offense and defense perform well throughout the regular season. Prescott and Williams play integral roles in securing the playoff berth. Williams steps up his game in the postseason, but Prescott does not. Dallas gets knocked out of the playoffs.
B) Ditto for offense and defense's regular-season performance. The same goes for each player's performance level. However, Williams does not step up his game, but Prescott does. Dallas gets ousted.
C) Check. Check. Both players have subpar performance. Dallas' playoffs implode.
The best outcome would be for Dallas to advance and win, regardless of how these two players perform. Yet, what conclusions can be drawn if the postseason short-circuits again, from what was said in the previous offseason? How about:
Scenario A - "Quinnen balled out. We lost anyway. Remember what Dak said in June? Fan Zone is gonna see even more Dak threads than usual."
Scenario B - "What the hell, Quinnen? You mean to tell me Dak played better than he ever had before in the postseason, but YOU sucked?"
Scenario C - "That's Dak being Dak again."
In truth, Scenario C might be unfair to Prescott, but whose fault is it for laying out the parameters of postseason success for the whole world to hear?
I have said it many times, going back before the last two starting franchise quarterbacks. Too many people in this franchise, from top to bottom, talk too much. That said, I do not roll my eyes nearly as hard at Prescott's comments AS I DID for the idiotic leading question that prompted him to say what he said.
I had zero problem with him asking the reporter to clarify the 'does it feel like 20 years since the last visit to the playoffs' nonsense. No one feels like it has been two decades for that. If you must be a jokey-joke interviewer, go find Jerry Jones. Ask him if he feels like it's been 60 YEARS since the franchise won a Super Bowl with him as its GM. It would still be a dumb leading question, but far less stupid by comparison.
