Cowboy Wire: How Steele is finally worth his $86M contract

The real problem here is that the OTHER tackle has a pass blocking problem also….this for an offense with two top receivers.

That’s why Guyton is probably the key to the season. Steele is going to be what he is. Guyton might have some room for improvement and IMO it’s the biggest and most important question on a team full of questions.

He is good at half his job (run blocking). Why should we be glad he plays a lot of snaps when he sucks at half of the snaps? I dont expect him to be a EW but we should not be content with average to below average players. Find a better player and move on.
The issue is the cost of finding a stronger player. I bash on the cowboys tackles all the time, but honestly it’s tough to upgrade the position without grabbing a top FA or trading a 1st round pick. If Steele was a free agent people would be pretty shocked by what a team would actually pay him. Mediocre tackles get paid well in free agency all the time due to the scarcity of the position.

The easier spot to upgrade is probably LT, but you at least have a player with youth and upside there currently.

Wow you pay a premium for a player that is partially effective and then you point to his durability as one of his best traits. We overpaid and have been unable to find his replacmeent.
Wrong. They haven't looked to replace him. Once they pay a guy he has to be one of the worst in the league for the Joneses to even consider moving on and Steele isn't that bad he just isn't great.

Left tackle ought to be fine considering the investment that was made, but in all reality, sometimes even first rounders bust. It doesn’t seem as if it’s an effort thing, so it could end up working out, but we won’t find out until it’s too late.

I agree on the tough spot they are in with upgrading RT. It won’t happen unless a guy like Nate Thomas shows up to camp on a mission and has made significant strides.

I don’t buy the “open competition everywhere” talk when it comes to OL. Thomas or another player would not take the job of either Guyton or Steele without significantly outplaying them in July and August. Significantly. Probably unlikely.

No better option too lazy to look elsewhere so we're stuck with him end of story it'll all be over soon I think lol

Keep up the good work.

Your strong opinion game is impressive as you sit in your little amateur chair in front of your screen. The experts here are so deep, I’m surprised they haven’t started a GFM to finance their own pro sports team and show us how it’s done.

TBH, The NFL should seriously consider holding tryouts like they did for Jesse Holley, but for GMs, coaches, and even player personnel.

Let the fan base step in and show us their skills. It feels like we’re missing out on greatness with all these professionals sharing their strong opinions from their screen game.

 :muttley: :espn:

No maybe this but for the sports teams they need to come up with a reality TV show that you all we could pick 10 of y'all that just are all over and you can win a spot in the Dallas Cowboys front office. With a one year contract to get it all turned around..

  • The Apprentice: The classic competition series where a group of aspiring business professionals battled through weekly high-stakes corporate tasks. Candidates faced intense boardroom grilling and the iconic phrase "You're fired!" until only one top-tier executive remained to run one of the host's companies.
  • Shark Tank: While primarily an investment show, it functions as a live audition for the best emerging entrepreneurs. Business owners must prove their professional acumen, financial literacy, and negotiation skills to secure backing from a panel of self-made billionaire and millionaire tycoons.
  • The Bloat
  • The Profit: Hosted by businessman Marcus Lemonis, this show focuses on saving failing small businesses by putting the spotlight on management, operational strategy, and what it truly takes to be an effective business professional.

If any OL gives up a sack, pressure, has a false start, holding penalty, does not run block on any given play. Even if only one time. He is a bum and he sucks.
That is what I learned from all the couch GM's.

Not saying Steele or Guyton are great, but are they as really bad as some fans say. Or are they throwing in what they get paid as a factor that makes them good or bad.
Same goes for all positions.

He’s counting less than $9m against the cap and not in the top ten RT in aav

He’s a really good run blocker but below average pass blocker

He played more snaps than any OT in the league last year.

People love to hate on him but that’s because they demand every RT be Erik Williams minus the multiple sexual assaults and other crimes.

The guy is serviceable and we have many bigger issues.
ONLY a football FOOL thinks he is serviceable
he is at best BOTTOM THIRD OF THE LEAGUE
and you think he is worth that money?

Weak. Your opinions are pretty much discounted around here.

I don’t have access to the data but I also imagine you’re top three “ignored” posters.

The issue with that logic is that even bottom third of the league RT starters still get paid pretty well. Steele is the 14th RT by AAV. Take out rookie contracts since they arent eligible to be paid more and Steele is paid fairly appropriately as one of the worst starting RTs in football.

He's at best serviceable. As an undrafted free agent, he has definitely overachieved and it is very commendable. I respect his work ethic and hustle.

He is also not that good a player and is a liability in the passing game. He has earned his money. But, Dallas can definitely upgrade the RT position.

Those are some hard hitting stats. Thanks for your contribution.

For those who probably aren’t familiar with his play beyond what they see in comments like the one above, here are at least some a few bits of info to take into consideration

  • Total Snaps: 1,163 offensive snaps played (first in the NFL)
  • Pass-Blocking Snaps: 602 snaps (yielded 3 sacks and 9 QB hits)
  • Run-Blocking: Earned elite run-blocking grades, ranking among the league's top 10 qualifying tackles with a roughly 79% run-block win rate.
  • Penalties: Commmitted only two penalties over the entire season.
  • Season Grade: Finished with a 63.6 overall PFF grade, ranking 55th out of 89 qualified NFL offensive tackles.
Kinda looks like average to me.

The Cowboys had exactly one pro bowl player on Offense and none on defense.

You’d think that with the beating Steele takes around here that all of the other guys were bound for the Hall of Fame.

You can’t address every need every off season, I’m sure that if the defense wasn’t an absolute wasteland, they would have addressed the OL, which is something they spend more draft capital on than most teams.

Steele is way down my list of priorities.

By the way, here are some details on the elite Tyler Smith, who received an NFL record setting contract for interior linemen last off season.

  • Run Blocking: 81.1 grade (Ranked 5th among all NFL guards)
  • Pass Blocking: 65.4 grade (Ranked 30th among all NFL guards)
  • Pressures Allowed: 26 total pressures (including 3 sacks on 1,110 offensive snaps)
Does Tyler Smith “suck”?

It’s all PFF based, which isn’t even internally consistent at times, but it’s better than “I saw some plays where he looked lost last season, or maybe it was two years ago”.
He’s the very definition of human turnstile on passing downs. He might as well not even be on the field when we pass. Just go 10 v 11.

i think it's just that we would like him to be the best version of himself. we've seen it. just want that.

And he is about 26th or so as regards actual ability

No he has not earned his money; he never has

No he has not earned his money; he never has
He's the 12th highest paid RT in the League in AAV. He may be the 16th best player at RT. So he is slightly overpaid based on my subjective view of where he ranks.

I'm not at all a Steele fan. But, being serviceable on a line with T.Smith, T. Booker, Beebe, and hopefully an improved Guyton, is easy to absorb and hide for most teams. IMHO
