NFL informs teams that Brendan Sorsby will be eligible for 2027 Draft

I think it would have been easier just to have the supplemental draft and let each team decide if/when to draft him. That way, if he went undrafted, he would become UDFA and teams could simply refuse to sign UNTIL they are satisfied with his recovery progress. This would pretty much take his Atty out of the picture.
the NFL specializes in Dumb

well, the NFL has a lot of things going for it the NCAA does not like anti trust legislation and collective bargaining and its a commercial enterprise legally speaking.
True. The NCAA is just a mess the past handful of years. Basically sitting on their hands waiting for congress to do something.

The question is does NFL want to win today or win tomorrow when it comes time to negotiate the new CBA. I think winning today will cost them more in the CBA battle to come. Sorsby's Attorney is not some 2 bit ambulance chaser in an off the rack suit.

I doubt the players as a whole nor the NFLPA really care all that much about this

The NFL would have been in a stronger position if they had stated that due to his gambling addiction, they chose not to allow him to be part of the NFL until he completed a treatment program.
Seems to me, though, based on previous players they have allowed into the supplemental draft, they don't have much of a legal ground to stand on, other than maybe arguing that his addiction could affect games. It looks like the league is saying we don't wanna in violation of its own rules. The outcome may depend on whether the lawsuit ends up in front of a pro-business or pro-individual court.

CFL says no thank you.

"Upholding the integrity of the league and ensuring fair competition are paramount to the CFL," the CFL said in a statement to USA Today. "The allegations involving Brendan Sorsby are serious and concerning.

"At this time, the CFL will not register a contract for him, and no team will be permitted to add him to its negotiation list."
I think what has turned off both the NFL and the CFL is that this kid seems to prioritize preserving his financial value over recovery. IMO the best thing he can do now is focus 100% on his recovery and show proof he's 100% clean by the 2027 draft.

That is why they should have made it conditional on him having treatment for his gambling addiction
The NFL has BRUTAL rules on gambling which have been in the league for like 70 years. That is sufficient precedent. But just saying no is a dumb play

Players union just does anything why would they agree to supplemental draft being optional? Why would the league even want that?

I’d avoid all this also if I’m the NFL. They do not at all need that kind of press with a draft that features only him.

Gambling is big business. It’s tough to be in bed with all these gambling sites and allow guys like that into the league.

He will be given his chance, just not his own special draft. Someone, whose job depends on winning, will take a shot on him.

It won’t be this team. If Jerry still ran it maybe.

You really think he doesn't make the big calls?

I don’t, no. I think he is certainly part of the decisions by committee thing this team swears by, but I don’t think he adamantly rules the room.

I think there’s times when he goes a little rogue (see: Lance, Trey, and/or Mingo, Jonathan) just to be petty and obnoxious, but no, I very much believe he defers to Stephen more often than not.

These are obviously guesses based on how the team was once run vs how it is now. I was not there. I think it’s a plausible scenario though.

plausible is not probable

And the problem is that Stephan is just as bad as he is so there is no real difference between them as regards football judgement

Didn’t say there was. Not sure what you’re getting at actually.

you are basically saying its a good thing that he is not making all the calls and I am saying with Dumbo Jr there it does not matter
