Twitter: It's offical: Pickens will play on the franchise tag

Ticking time bomb. Guy cant handle himself. Throwing the ball in the opponent face. Shoving the opponent after the play. Showboating. Gun celebrations. He will cost this team multiple times again this season. Death. Taxes. And Pickens dumb penalties. Lock it in.
When has any of that happened since we traded for him?

If he has a good or similar season to last year, he will most likely be gone.

Hopefully, the team can take advantage of having two #1 caliber receivers this year?
No he won’t. They’ll just tag him again. I think they planned tagging back to back years anyway.

It hasn't. It happened when he was an immature 22 year old in Pittsburgh. People mature. I made very dumb decisions when I was 22 that im happy werent in the national spotlight and don't follow me for the rest of my life and I had about the most healthy upbringing and the most support anyone could ever hope for.

What's it for us to WAIT because we're not sure due to his so called behavior I'm assuming, yet he can be a good guy, end up getting paid by us, and going off to be a bad player for this team in terms of behavior
We’ve been over why they tend to wait on big contracts and don’t care about paying a higher AAV.

There’s no reason to not allow this to play out…unless GPs camp is begging for a discounted offer to get it done now. That’s probably not the case.

The big thing for now is who assumes the risk for possible severe injury. Right now that’s on Pickens. The minute they hand over the signing bonus it falls to the team.

If we are being fair, we can’t go blasting them for being careful on giving out a second huge WR deal to someone who has had some off the field issues in the past.

Maybe he proves to be very necessary for the success of the team. Maybe not. That has to play out Coogs!

This is being played correctly by each side.

I guess, we shall see!!

Not true brother.

If George Pickens has another outstanding receiving season like last year, it would further solidify this front office's willingness to sign GP long-term. A new contract could also be worked to where it helps both George Pickens and the Cowboys salary cap.

Now maybe everyone will stop with the notion that he is only a me first player. I literally do not remember a player who was so worthy of a second contract playing on the franchise tag with so little drama. But yet he still gets a bad rap from everyone even though he handled this with incredible maturity
Is this sarcasm?

Agreed. The guy is a massively talented head case.

I'm pretty sure Dak played on the tag with no drama from his camp. Yeah, he was greedy other times, but he played on the tag without complaint or drama, if I recall correctly.

Still, I'm excited for Pickens this year.

Well I don't think they will tag him again, his salary will rise by like 20% right?....so might as well do a deal at that point or let him walk. I am assuming they aren't going to want to pay $30+ million to two WR's? I'd be surprised if they do that but who knows...

I think a lot depends on how Flournoy looks also. If they believe he can move into the #2 role, then they'll probably let someone else give Pickens an insane contract.

I don't think they'll tag him twice but could be wrong. That's be a lot of money tied up in your receivers if he gets another 20-25% on top of that $28 million the next tag.

George Pickens is a rare breed. I would argue he shows flashes of potentially being better than CeeDee. If Pickens lights it up even more this upcoming season, the Cowboys definitely need to find a way to keep him long-term, especially since he is younger than CeeDee. Could the Cowboys keep both? They could if they seriously want to. Plus, CeeDee's contract can become voidable after the 2028 season. His biggest contract salary cap hit would be next year (2027) where he will count $28 million against the cap. In 2028, CeeDee's contract cap hit is only $2 million, so that short window from now until then gives the team the opportunity to sign George Pickens long-term if they truly choose to keep him beyond 2026.

If Pickens would agree to a contract reduction of 1 million for every unsportsmanlike penalty he earns, then maybe

I think there’s a better chance he is tagged a second time than able to reach a long term deal with Dallas.

They can afford it, they can make it work, but that’s not how Stephen Jones thinks. At some point, if they are ever going to win anything of significance, he has to stop worrying about the cap years down the road.

They are always going to have some sort of a cap issue, because they suck at managing it, and always put their own financial interests ahead of what’s best for the team. They are too close to the money and it’s a serious conflict.
