Romo on pardon my take about not winning a Superbowl

It was not my intention to put the focus on Tony Romo in my reply to @ArtClink . Instead, I tried explaining why the Vikings defense (especially the defensive front four) totally disrupted the Cowboys' offense almost all game.

I was putting his bad game in better context. In no way did his responsibilities get a reprieve. One thing all quarterbacks (without exception) must do is protect the ball. And it does not matter if they are facing the best defense to ever walk onto the field. So, I made another video from the same YouTube source :



[Video start] - Romo scrambled after the Vikings literally destroyed his pocket. He fumbled. You can't fumble the ball. Luckily, the defense held and Minnesota punted the ball back.

[Video mark 0:49] - This fumble did not end up as a turnover. However, I intentionally threw this in because of Andre Gurode's snapping woes at center. This was another occasion when Gurode hurried and did not cleanly deliver the ball.

[Video mark 1:35] - Romo was blindsided. Yes, Flozell Adams was injured. Doug Free rolleyes: ) took over for him. Yes, Jason Witten basically whiffed helping block future Hall of Famer Jared Allen. Does not matter. Yes, you must anticipate that pressure, especially with a backup/swing tackle, and not take the hit-and-fumble.

[Video mark 2:41] - Yes. Your team is down by 14 late in the third quarter. Unfortunately, this was a perfect example of Romo's greatest weakness. The man would press trying to make a play...

• He had been hounded all game up to that point.
• He had fumbled early.
• Then Shaun Suisham missed a 48-yarder.
• Then he fumbled again.
• Then the Vikings forced a punt.
• Then Suisham missed a 49-yarder.
• Then they punted again.

The trap in his mind was set. Romo made the RIGHT decision while under the same pressure, pumped, and brought the ball back to his chest. THEN he reflexively tried squeezing a pass to Patrick Crayton, with defenders bracketing his receiver, AND yet another all-game-long defender in his face. You can't turn over the ball even under pressure.

It was a bad game. It was a bad game all-around. Romo also did not do his job at inopportune times. The Vikings had a great game because Dallas mostly let them have a great game.

I appreciate you keeping things on your objective perspective understood, and making your intentions very clear. I never meant to absolve romo from any responsibility . What I see from the video is horrid blocking and a lack of making any adjustment to it. I would have put romo in motion but the defense was coming in from everywhere.

Opinions vary from possession to possession, but should he have eaten the ball on that particular drive? Yes.

It was late in the third quarter. It was 3rd down. A ten-yard or more play would be necessary to convert the down. Fourth down meant punting the ball, BUT a turnover puts Minnesota in immediate scoring position-most likely within 30 yards of paydirt.

Not sure how many folks (whatever their opinion of Romo might be) would agree, but I would say the risk of increasing your opponent's lead was exponentially higher where and when the ball was snapped. The same risk would have been lower if it had been taken in enemy territory, though. Just my opinion.

No. It was if that was the worst thing that ever happened to him, then he's lived a blessed life. Which is a fact thatonly idiots would be upset at.

Detailed analysis. We weren't gonna win that game either way. That game like all other playoff losses the past 30 seasons are 100% on the idiot owner who hired an idiot for a GM.

Romo fumbled the snap and yes, if the defense forces a 3-and-out, then we still have time for one last possession, albeit with little time left but enough to try a few plays. Again our defense simply can't make the critical stops in the playoffs when it absolutely matters.

That game like all other playoff losses the past 30 seasons are 100% on the idiot owner who hired an idiot for a GM.

I don;t think it should be 100%. Whoever snapped the gosh dang slippery ** ball to Romo...should have noticed it.

And Romo should NEVER have been in that play to begin with. That's on Bill.

I can see your point of view. Here are a few examples for why I believe the defense is the reason we can't advance deep into the playoffs

• Romo fumbled snap in Seattle: Romo is the only reason we had a chance to win at the end and if our defense could have stopped Seattle 3-and-out, then we would have had one more drive.
• Dez catch vs Packers: 4:58 left on the clock when the refs blew the call. Our defense folded faster than Superman on laundry day.
• Dak's rookie season: Dak mounted a furious comeback only to see the defense give up that 4th and 25 sidelines catch.

Romo and Dak should have played better in the playoffs and both had some bad games (Romo v Vikings, Dak v 49ers), but our defense simply could not make a critical stop when the game was on the line.

Understood but when your investment is on offense they must carry you. And they had opportunities to do so.

I'm not trying to challenge...maybe more like refresh my memory. What playoff games were Romo's fault? As a QB!

Coming up short on opportunities doesn’t necessarily mean it was their fault .

But the fumble snap in Seattle , the interception against Giants and risking going long to Dez on 4th down in Green Bay all impacted outcome in those playoff games .

Do I blame him for losses , no but we had opportunities to win and didn’t make the plays.

Realistically, there was no way they were going to bench Prescott after what he'd done while Romo was out. There was too much momentum; that train had left the station. Especially when for all anyone knew, Romo might get hurt immediately. It sucked that his career had to end that way. But I don't think it could have gone any other way.

It could have gone another way. But our history with Romo was waiting on someone else to save us.

And basically why we stayed with Dak even if we thought a healthy Romo provided us a better opportunity.

In other words , we were better off losing with Prescott than with Romo.

That’s actually the problem that our beloved fuhrer spends most of the money on the offensive side of the ball. That’s problematic because the Super Bowl champions the past umpteen years all had a top 10 or even top 5 defense, and our FO is continuing to overspend on offense.

No doubt . But my bigger point was we had opportunities with Romo despite not having an Elite defense to advance further. Same with Prescott .

While I wouldn’t blame them for the losses they could have had better games on the bigger stages to carry the team . Just saying…
