So many Great Games over the Years to pick.The 1992,93 and 95 NFC Championship Games.All 5 of the Super Bowl Wins.The 1972 Comeback Playoff Win at SF,the 1975 Hail Mary Game,the 1980 Playoff Comeback at Atlanta.
For me it has to be the December 16 1979 Week 16 35-34 Victory over Washington at Texas Stadium.The Greatest NFL Game that I have ever watched.
NFC East Title on the line,biggest rival,so much drama leading up to this contest.Washington had beaten the Cowboys at RFK Stadium in mid November and ran the score up by calling a Time Out to kick a last second FG.Talked a bunch the week of the game about how they were going to go down to Dallas and do it again,that they had pushed Dallas around and intimidated them.Coach Tom Landry cut Thomas Henderson immediately after that loss and the Cowboys Defense was struggling,playing the entire 1979 without the injured Charlie Waters(who was the brains of that unit),the temporarily retired Ed "Too Tall"Jones(who was an anchor at DE) and the permanently retired Jethro Pugh at DT(whose leadership and respect was sorely missed).
The Cowboys were hurting big time heading into this Game.On Offense Tony Dorsett couldn't play due to a shoulder injury,Drew Pearson was severely limited with a knee injury and Robert Newhouse was dealing with a lower leg injury.On Defense,Randy White was dealing with a foot injury that had plagued him late in the season and Randy Hughes(who was filling in for Charlie Waters at Strong Safety)was out with a dislocated shoulder.It was going to take a big time effort to defeat that tough Washington Team.
When this Game kicked off at 4:00 at CBS with Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier on the Broadcast there was a feeling it was going to be Memorable Day.And that is exactly what happened.
Roger Staubach's Greatest Game.Overcoming a 17-0 then a 34-21 deficit.The way he carved the Skins up in the last 3+ Minutes to get the 2 TD'S was him at his best.His Leadership,Ability and Competitive Desire would not let His Team come up short that day.
There were other Cowboys Players that stood out during that game.Preston Pearson was brilliant as the 3rd Down RB with his clutch receiving and outstanding route running.Tony Hill had many important catches and the Game Winning TD.Ron Springs stepped in as a rookie for Tony Dorsett at RB and had a terrific game running and receiving.Harvey Martin was a pass rushing force closing out the win.And Larry Cole had a big day at DE with an early sack to hold the Skins to a FG and made one of the Great Tackles of All Time stopping John Riggins on 3rd and 2 to get Staubach the ball back with 2 Minutes left.Cole always played outstanding against Washington.
One thing rarely mentioned after this game was when John Riggins scored on an incredible 66 Yard TD outrunning the entire Dallas Defense to put the Skins up 34-21 was that Coach Landry went up and down the bench telling the Team to stay together and offering encouragement.Something he rarely did during his career.
