News: Eagles make Carter the highest paid DT ever with $152m contract

They will soon have no choice but to have QB's not count against the cap.
That seems like a reasonable measure. It is one I thought the owners and players' union would discuss and concede after a couple years in the 1990s. There was zero doubt contract compensation would eventually explode.

The NBA has a soft salary cap. Teams have the flexibility to employ the Larry Bird rule to exceed the cap. The NHL has a hard salary cap, but does have rules for performance bonuses that can modify cap calculations.

MLB has no hard salary cap. It has a competitive balance tax (e.g. luxury tax). There are penalties for spending whatever teams want on player salaries, but there is no hard lock on owners' checkbooks either.

The NFL has worked almost exclusively with the same salary cap structure since its first rendition of the collective bargaining agreement was ratified in 1993 for the 1994 regular season. The owners have refused to make exceptions for quarterbacks in order to retain tight control over that and all other positions' compensation.

However, league revenues will not continue expand upwards at a controllable rate either. During one given season in the future, the well may not be deep enough for a quarterback or two during contract re-negotiations. That is the day I hope to see. How will the owners as a whole react to a contract demand so large that it makes them blink?

It may never happen, but I have never been a proponent of the current CBA/salary cap/free agency system since before day 1. It would be nice for me seeing these billionaires scramble to finally address a problem that was destined to occur.

7 pages for a non Dallas player.
Then again there are many pseudo Eagles fans on here.
LoL. What a garbage take.

Because people are discussing an Eagles player’s contract that could certainly affect a Dallas Cowboys player’s contract in the future (Quinnen Williams), that makes them pseudo-Eagles fans?

Thanks for telling people how to be a fan, Rockport.

I doubt it. The NFL allows flexibility no other major sport provides to owners and GMs. Non fully guaranteed deals and being able to restructure contracts.
If the cap were to ever slow down, you would just see a flood of still decent players being cut for not being worth their contract anymore, and then the league would possibly slow down on the growth of contract numbers.
Carter's deal will be restructured as needed to keep the Eagles competitive as required. At some point the Eagles may have a throw away year-similar to Miami right now with dead cap, but even in Miami they will have an abundance in cap space in 27-29 to retool quickly as needed.

I am looking at their current contracts and I still see a huge problem for the Eagles in 2029. Then again, the pay tiny salaries and huge bonuses, optional bonuses, during the length of the contract. They can dump cap space by cutting or trading players. They traded AJ Brown and avoid millions of dollars in option bonuses over the next 5 years. I believe we will see them dump other players over the next two years for the same reason. As of last season, they had over $400 million in CAP dollars in voidable years. Getting rid of Brown brings that down at least $25 million.

This is a Garbage take. I did not tell anyone how to be a Fan.
I guess you feel guilty, as you are one that always praises the Eagles. But if the Cowboys do the same thing you berate them.

lol. Your ignorance knows no bounds

Please show me ONE time in recent memory that I have praised the Eagles. Much less how I ALWAYS praise the Eagles.

You have NO idea what in the hell you are talking about.

I know exactly what I talk about. Stop your ignorant posts to me.

Massive overpay for a guy with a lot of concerns. But, going into season 3 of the deal he won't likely even be in the top 5. Just the way salaries go.

No. the fact that there absolutely ARE a bunch of Eagles fans on here pretending not to be is what makes them Eagles fans. It's the ultimate proof of the absolute obsession Eagles fans have with the Cowboys. No other fan base would do even think about doing this the way Eagles fans do. It's a sickness that deserves it's own psychological study.
