Well just in case i did not properly state it: my post was meant to support your view. Not to question it.
But i do see the Romo siuation different.
Zeke (a good RB) was seen as the last piece the 2016 needed to compete for the big show. i would have never drafted one that high, but that was the mood back then.
In my opinion that's only partially true. Back in 2016 I sided with the camp that felt you stick with the hot hand. Romo already had an extensive injury history before 2016 and I remember being frustrated by Jerry's unwillingness to draft potential replacements. Some may say that was Dak, but I feel Dak was only a camp body who wasn't brought in as an expected replacement for Romo. Dak ended up having a good rookie season, but don't forget he was aided tremendously by the outstanding play at RB by Elliott. A stud RB having an MVP season will always help the QB look better.
I see the pick of Dak the same way. He was picked to have another camp body. I also see Daks good stats the way you do. Dak never was a good QB he looked good when supported by a strong running game. And in his rookie season, especially with a SB worthy roster, that was easy for him.
Where Jerry played a part in Romo being replaced - Romo was the starter and had earned that spot. With that being said, when he was healthy enough to return he should have been allowed to move back into the QB1 spot. In my opinion, it was Jerry who blocked that move. Garrett was a massive puppet who followed Jerry's orders, so all signs point to Jerry being the culprit who ended Romo's career, with a bit of assistance from mother nature, of course.
Well you of course can say Jerry played that part. But you have to look at the whole picture. And to me the decission was forced upon Jerry. Not vice versa.
This wasnt Romos first injury. And the hit he took wasnt that bad. His past injuries also happened (afair) by minor contact. So to have gotten the feeling the guy is brittle was justified.
Romo also was never somebody who took proper care of his body the way you should or have to if you want to endure football for a longer time. But he was always very competitive and wanted to play. Regardless of consequences.
So the situation was that you have a player from which you expect to have another season ending or at least couple of games ending injury by minor contract. Just because his body is not in good shape and he is injury prone because he had already a lot of.
But also you cant trust the player when he says he is able to play. Just because he will tell you everything to get back on the field. And believe me Romo would have told you everything you wanted to hear. Especially knowing about our roster, the chance for a ring, seeing what a bad rookie QB was able to do. What could he do with that? So near to his careers end.
No Romo was done. It was the consequences of his unprofessional approach to the sport combined with too many injuries. And if you would have put him back in the game and he got hurt again after 3 games what does that do to your hot hand? The guy is still a rookie, new to everybody. Nobody has a feel for his psyche and what benching does to him. But about Romo you could be pretty sure. You couldnt trust his body anymore. As much as Romo wantedto.
And now just imagine you decide to put him back in. After two major back injuries. The guy goes down again and has a life changing injury?! Would you like to justify your decission in front of the world?
That all together made Jerrys decission the right one. But it wasnt a decission Jerry made out of his own power. The decission was forced upon him by the circumstances.
And its a way of behaviour Jerry is authentic in. I remember when Aikman went doen with an ongoing back injury. Jerry took care. Aikman wanted to play again. But Jerry pulled to trigger. You can say a lot negative about Jerry but he protects his beloved ones.
I think I'm the one who said Jerry won't do it, and I still feel that way. Look at who Jerry has brought in at QB over the past 10 years, has a single one of the screamed "OMG! This guy could replace Dak"? None of them have. It's classic Jerry, and Jerry has been doing this since half way through Romo's career. Jerry simply doesn't want any competition at QB - at least not until he's forced into a corner by something like a broken back.
Yes, as i said in my first sentence. I suppport your view: Jerry wont do it.I dont know about the reasons why. I could of course speculate and have ideas.
And yes this franchise doesnt invest in the most important position. They "lucked" into Romo and they did again with Dak. Well i put that in quotes just because with both QBs we were lucky to find a starter when we were i dire meed of one. But both didnt do squat at the position. But we had to stick with both because - yes - we dont invest into the most important position. And thats a very big reason this franchise is as bad as it is.
