No, teams that get the player do not get any dead money. That is money that has already been paid to the player.

The team would inherit the guaranteed portions of the contract for the remaining years other than bonuses. So if the next year's base salary is guaranteed, the team trading for him would inherit that. If there are roster bonuses, the team trading for him would inherit that. Those things are included in the dead money for the current team if it cuts him, but not if it trades him.

Miami's dead cap if it cut him today would be $34 million. If the Dolphins traded him, Miami would be on the hook for his signing and restructure bonus money (already paid to the player), which adds up to around $15 million. They may also have to pay his $50,000 workout bonus because I believe that is based on offseason workouts.

It’s entirely possible this new contract gets both teams to agree to move forward for a 2. Question is when will Miami be ready to punt on the season. Now or in season.

I’d give up a 2nd for him. Proven quality player who immediately improves and stabilizes the middle of the defense.

Kenny Clark-Quinnen Williams, Brooks-Overshown, Downs-Thompson.

High quality in the middle at all three levels.

yeah moreso meant i don’t think it’s an impediment or that they won’t move him. there’s been several other posts detailing why it may now be preferable. he’ll, it’s not out of the realm of possibilities that a trade was contingent on a new deal.

Trading him now creates a Massive Dead Cap Penalty: Before the extension, Miami could have traded Brooks to clear his ~$11 million cap hit. Now, because Miami already paid out that $12.31 million signing bonus, trading him would trigger an immediate $34.7 million dead cap hit for the Dolphins. Miami would be paying tens of millions of dollars for Brooks to play for another team.

They are not doing that now to get a low 1st instead of a 2nd or 3rd pick pre extension.
