Everyone's Championship Talk Vs What & When Jimmy Johnson Said

Fan Zone discussions have become centered around what current coaches and players have said about playing in the Super Bowl. The talk is not unique. The same talk has been ongoing, almost uninterrupted, for decades by other coaches and players, and especially in Dallas.

Lately, what Jimmy Johnson had previously said about playing and winning the Super Bowl has been introduced as a counterpoint defense for present-day comments. Is it the same thing, though? I invite anyone to add additional cited quotes (not hearsay) Johnson made--only during the time he was Dallas' head coach--in addition to the few I am posting here:

“We’ll win here, and we’ll win big. Write it down.” (quoted by Sports Illustrated's Peter King)

These were his words after becoming the team's second-ever head coach. Unfounded or not, his self-confidence came from what he accomplished at the college level, including winning or competing in national championship games.
“We’ll be in the playoffs.” (credit @Flamma for giving me the idea to search harder)

Here's something to consider about what Johnson said during the offseason before the 1991 season. Dallas opened the previous season 3-7. There had been obvious improvement made in comparison to Johnson's first season, but there seemed like equally obvious room for greater growth.
Then it happened. Roster improvement and the Johnson system clicked. The Cowboys beat the Rams, Washington, Saints, and Cardinals, evened their record at 7-7, and greatly improved their opportunity of being in the 1990 playoffs. Endure 53 seconds of Chris Berman to refresh old members' recollections and provide better context for younger members who were too young or not even born yet to understand what happened next:

Apologies to Babe Laufenberg, but Johnson's team was in the same situation as practically all NFL teams losing their starter: done for the season. Months later, and before the next season began, Johnson spoke with self-confidence that he already had a playoff-caliber team with his now-healthy starting quarterback. On to the supposedly best Johnson quote that counterpoints have rested upon:
“We will win the ball game. And you can put it in three‑inch headlines.” (link)
^ Johnson said this in late January 1994. His self-confidence nested within the knowledge of having a team that matured FROM:
  • Reaching the divisional round in 1991
  • Winning Super Bowl XXVII
  • Decisively winning 12 of 16 games AFTER a two-game Emmitt Smith holdout AND winning a huge game AT New York (the legend of Smith grows), cementing a #1 playoff seed AND dispatching the pesky Packers in a game that was 17-3 Dallas at halftime
Questions (and I will leave Jerry Jones' decades-old diarrhea of the mouth out of this):
  1. Should playoff and Super Bowl comments made by players and coaches over the past 30 years, including this offseason, be taken the same as what Johnson said?
  2. If the answer is yes, where has players' and coaches' inner assurance come from?
  3. Could players instead mainly base their confidence on seeing peers like Seattle bounce from 9-8 (winning record), 10-7 (winning record) to last season's Super Bowl champions?

I didn't go into this level depth/detail of comparing Dak's recent Super Bowl team comments to Jimmy's but I did imply that Coach Jimmy and his team were a huge difference than Dak and Schotty and this current team.
And...
My opinion to Dak is to shut your mouth and play because I don't think this team is in the galaxy of having Jimmy's team's talent AND they've missed the playoffs for 2 years straight so I don't get the arrogance angle? And after that there's no real need to even go into all of Daks previous 10 years playoff results and the lack of success.
So overall, I just laugh at the ones who think it's okay because to them it the same in their eyes.

AND Nothing could be further from the truth.
Even In their dreams this team couldn't be as good as Jimmy's team.
LOL

Freaking embarrassing is what it really is.
Got the puppet master GM/Owner and his head lap dog player mouthpiece selling that inferior product side by side.
Or trying at least.

It is unfortunate this topic will rebound back onto Dak Prescott only. He is just the latest rendition of decades long (cue Run D.M.C.) talks too much and never shuts up.

Even so, he and any other player will say whatever they want. My OP is not discussing what the players say, but how we on CowboysZone attempt to defend what they say by using Jimmy Johnson's words as comparable evidence.

Players cannot wait to say what they want. Perhaps observers can choose to wait until the team demonstrates they are dead serious, top four, NFC conference-level competitors with dominating play after three-fourths or the entire season has played out. Then, players' Super Bowl claims may have earned *enough* merit that begins to approach Johnson's proclamations.

I mean, seriously, every team is different every season with different players and coaches sometimes. This season's team has not even shown on the field that it is even at the level of the #2-seeded 2023 team. And everyone knows how quickly that team went fishing. Shoot, fishing rods were being grabbed at halftime for Pete's sake.

Jimmy and the two SB winning teams were a different breed than anything we've had since he left and that includes the SB that moron Switzer won with Jimmy's leftovers

Dak seems to be taking a more aggressive approach this season with regards to comments made to the media and teammates.

The 'GOTI' (Greatest Offense There Is) and Super Bowl comments Dak has made seem different than his past approach of being bland.

It baffles me too. It's one thing to have been born after the glory days, but you can read history even as a young child. Just knowing it has been 30 years ought to be enough to make even the new marks skeptical. Frankly, everyone needs to be in "prove it" mode.
I haven’t seen one poster who’s NOT in “prove it” mode.

DAL has missed the playoffs two years in a row and Dak has yet to stay healthy two seasons in a row. It's not looking good

It's consistently been one step forward and then two steps back. They could not build on the 07 season. Nor the 09 season or 14 season. The list goes on and on.

Historically bad franchises like the Saints and Bucs (twice!!) have won the SB since the Cowboys last made an NFC title game. The Lions & Commanders made an NFC title game the past few years. These are not elite franchises. And yet....

Geez. That's how bad it's gotten!!!

Pardon my question but did he say any of this before getting David Howard, cornerback Issiac Holt, running back Darrin Nelson, defensive end Alex Stewart, and a massive package of future draft picks (three first-rounders, three second-rounders, a conditional third-round pick, and a sixth-round pick) from the Herschel Walker trade?

Ah, 1989 was the trade date so Jimmy called his shot. Big cajones

The trade was executed on October 12, 1989. The details can be read here:

Only the OP's first example is the single one that predates the transaction.

Was there a salary cap when Jimmy was in Dallas?
How does that change things? My point isn't about the cap or even pure roster talent—it's about mindset and accountability. Jimmy's teams had a level of focus, drive, and mental toughness that we haven't seen around here in decades. Jimmy had those teams locked in and ready to win, plain and simple.

Jerry Jones was not the GM and Head Coach. Therefore Jimmy Johnson the Head Coach and GM was the leader on and off the field. The players had to buy in. Jimmy Johnson when talking to the media said that he was having a "team meeting".

You cannot lead from a Stadium Suite. Jerry Jones is having a team meeting with himself.

...okey dokey, my friend.

I agree with you.

My OP never said anything that disputes who was in charge.

Did you read the first two paragraphs? That's what I am talking about.

The questions have nothing to do with the Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones' professional relationship. The questions are for debating whether what Jimmy Johnson said about the team playing for championships after his team or his pre-NFL coaching abilities demonstrated it can play for championships

is

the exact same thing as players saying they will be playing for championships before demonstrating squat first.

Both my questions and the entire opening post have nothing to do with who was the alpha male between Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones. That is crystal clear. Yes, it does have something to do with Johnson's pre-NFL established leadership, but taking this simple OP solely in that context oversimplifies everything.

Post #63 may prove more enlightening about what the OP tried to convey: https://cowboyszone.com/threads/eve...-when-jimmy-johnson-said.545519/post-14865487
