Still not sold on our HC, but starting to get some Doug Pederson vibes

Ah yes, the classic “you’re just negative about everything” response when you don’t actually want to address what I said.

I gave a specific opinion about Schottenheimer and explained why I’m not sold on him. You responded by making it about me personally “bringing down threads.” That’s not a rebuttal, it’s just a convenient way to dismiss an opinion you don’t like.

And “watch the season play out” is literally what we’re going to do. I’m predicting Schotty gets exposed. You apparently think he won’t. That’s called a football discussion. We don't all have to sit around holding hands and praising every Cowboys decision to participate in the thread.
moreso make it substantive. “he’s a fraud and going to be exposed”

cool

I will also add that if Jerry had a football brain (he doesn't) he should be backing up the truck for Mike Tomlin.
I don’t know about that. I am not totally sold on Schotty, but I would take Schotty over Tomlin. Tomlin was the master of mediocrity.

Schotty is definitely not McVay or Shanahan. He’s certainly not winning any awards for innovation. He’s on the brink on being Scott Linehan when he was the Rams coach but if he can remove himself from playcalling and let his offensive staff modernize the pass offense as they did with the run plays, he has a better chance of being more like Brian Billick than Scott Linehan.

So now we’ve moved from “you’re negative and bring down threads” to “be more substantive.”

I gave my reasons. “He’s a fraud and will be exposed” was my conclusion. You could’ve challenged the argument instead of making it about me personally.

Cool.

I did address it. He has had one year, with an injury rif=dden defense, under a horrible DC. I said, give him this year and see.

You did not give reason other than Jerry wanted him there. That is just old continued whining, it is not a reason.

I did not say he would or not. I simply said, he did a fine job, and see how this season goes.
And I do not praise everything, but I do not hate everything.
Like some do on here all the time. And I do mean that both ways, pro and con.

You’re still avoiding the actual point. I criticized Schottenheimer and gave my reasoning. Your response has now gone from “you’re negative about everything” to “you’re whining” to implying I’m one of those people who “hates everything.” None of that addresses the argument; it just attacks the person making it.

And no, my argument isn’t simply “Jerry wanted him.” My point is that Schottenheimer spent decades in the NFL without another team viewing him as HC material, then suddenly Jerry Jones, whose coaching decisions I don’t exactly consider a gold standard, decides he’s the guy. That gives me plenty of reason to be skeptical.

You think last year earned him another year to prove himself. Fine. I think the circumstances covered up some of his shortcomings and that he’ll be exposed this season. Also fine.

That’s called disagreeing about football. You don’t need to turn every opinion you dislike into “whining,” “hating,” or “bringing down the thread.”

Some fans just dont appreciate talent.

It's common knowledge that coach Schottenheimer was the most sought after candidate for HC by scores of teams.

One article inferred that the Chiefs were ready to ditch Andy Reid if Shoddy agreed to come on board.

Bunch of malcontents here

I judge him by the players. In all the interviews I have seen they all preach brotherhood and communication. When he was shown yelling at them when they asked the players about it they all said he is just trying to get more out of us. He seems to be building a culture of good men who want to fight for each other. I am rooting for his success and excited to see results this year. Also his story he told on the ticket about Rex Ryan was absolutely hilarious. I also like the man.

It's 2026. Players today do not respond to coaches like Johnson and Landry and Parcells. Dan Campbell is probably the only "old school" coach left. Even Pete Carroll, well into his 70s, was one of the "likable" guys.

It's the coaches like Sean McVay, Nick Sirianni, etc. that are able to communicate with this generation of athlete. And I think Schottenheimer fits into that category, even at age 52.
Yes, they do. Do you think players in 1985 were stupid? There has always been and will always be a BALANCE of power...and that balance depends upon rings, experience, gravitas, personal charisma, expertise, etc....to the degree a coach excels in one or more of these, that coach can move just like Landry or Shula or Vermeill or Lombardi...

For example, although I agree with the move to trade Micah, it was unfortunate that our "GM" Jerry was the one doing it. But that could EASILY have been Reid or a Dan Campbell saying he's not a fit and we value stopping the run. And it could have been sparked by the same disrespectful move of resting on the training table during a game.

So I don't agree with this "it's 2026" BS. People are people and men are men. Players have MORE power, but there are limits...and good coaches have TONS of power. You're just used to seeing puppets here in Dallas.

Did anyone "like" Jimmy Johnson or Tom Landry or Bill Parcells?

Nice guy Mike McCarthy was run out of town.

Garrett, Campo and Switzer were plenty likeable...how'd they do?
There's certainly different styles of coaching and the idea of what a coach should be has evolved over the years. I don't believe the disciplinary style lands the same way it once did, but you can still be likable while holding folks accountable. You just need the respect of the locker room to listen.

Just an affable get along to get along type of coach, wasn't the first second or third consideration and kinda tripped and fell into the job much to the fanbases dismay. But just had a little something in how he related to the players and handled the big egos in the lockeroom and the front office.

Maybe we can harness a bit of the same lightning.
If it were up to the fans, there would be a new head coach every three years, with the previous coach being tarred and feathered and thrown in a lake.

Agreed. But this makes my point: Likeability is but one variable...it doesn't guarantee success. In fact, it's a nice-to-have. Andy Reid was a highly successful player's coach who didn't win the SB until he got Mahomes. With McScab the ceiling was the NFC Championship game and one SB appearance.

So...likeability be damned...give me talent.

I didn't like the hire when it was made. I assumed it was Jerry hiring someone he felt he could control and pay on the cheap.

That said, I like what I've seen so far. From a culture standpoint, Schotty brings a lot of energy and connects with his players well, but I've seen instances of Schotty also being willing to hold them accountable or challenge them on something. I can understand some people viewing Schotty as a try hard, but I think he's being genuine. And judging by what the players say about him, it seems he is managing to create a balance between having fun but working hard.

I also think he's brought something to the offense it has needed for a long time. Across both the Garrett and McCarthy years, I read a lot of comments from defensive players around the league saying how predictable the Cowboys offense was based on personnel and formation and how they knew the play was going to be a run or pass. Listening to Greg Olsen last year, he said under Schotty, the offense is now wedding the run and pass well, meaning they're able to either run or pass out of each look, so they're not telegraphing their intentions pre-snap. Schotty also got more pre-snap motion and misdirection incorporated, which was nice to see.

I thought the offense did a better job last season sustaining drives more consistently when the game was still competitive versus in previous seasons when it seemed the offense was more sporadic in doing so and they got a lot of their yardage once they were a few scores behind and the opponents' D was playing semi-prevent.

I don't know whether he ultimately succeeds or fails, but I think he brings more capabilities to the job than I first assumed.

I know I'm mostly negative regarding Schotty - a ton of this is due to how Jerry ultimately "settled" on him as the choice - but I would love for him to be successful. I guess I'm torn between him being a coach's son who has seen tons of football and has his own style vs. a goofy Jerry puppet who is in over his head.

Right now, I believe it's the latter...the backwards sun visor thing is total goofball stuff.

i’m not a fan, did not like the hire etc, but just giving consideration to the idea it may work out in spite.

Shotty and co has this team moving differently, I believe in shotty and i give them till 2028 to make it to the big dance.

I don’t think you understand Dan Campbell or how he coaches

He’s a blueprint for modern servant leader players coach

He doesn’t intimidate or bully like Jimmy. He wins them over with his passion, empathy and partnership.

The old school didn’t die but it did evolve.

coaches succeed through being transparent with their players. Jimmy was transparently ferocious. Pete Carrol was transparently positive in an infectious way.

Two vastly different types of authenticity but both worked

The change is that the ferocious and intimidating authenticity isn’t as effective anymore. You say you don’t buy it but no one bullies players anymore. There’s a reason for that.

It’s all about accountability now and that’s actually something Schottenheimer practices.

He is a combination of Carroll and Marty. Always blunt, always honest.

So far the players seem to be responding to him in a way they we didn’t see with McCarthy or Garrett.

Well find out if he’s successful on the field.
