Our Achilles Heel

With the vast improvements on the defensive side of the ball, I started thinking about the one weak link this season. IMO, it is the backup QB position. Sam "Boog" Howell is a bus driver at best, while Joe "Rocket Arm" Milton III has been a complete disaster. It would suck if this season is a bust, not because of the defense but because we didn't invest in a quality backup QB.
What teams have a terrific backup QB?

Every team in the NFL is saddled with the issue of backup QB. And there's a few that have it at starting QB.

I might take a ton of heat for this, but I am not out on Sam Howell.

Yes, he threw 23 picks his only season as the starter in Washington, but the guy had ZERO protection. Was sacked 76 times and was under constant pressure; which likely led to at least half of those interceptions.

He also did not play in a pro-style offense at North Carolina. But he has experience starting at the NFL level now and he's still young enough to shed his bad habits. Given another year or two the Cowboys might have at least a competent backup.
Honestly, havent watched mutch of Sam.

As has been said multiple times, if Dak goes down, its over. No backup will take us to a SuperBowl.

The real question is, can even a healthy Dak take us to a SupeBowl?

Agreed, I don't have any faith in either one of them. BUT - OUR ACHILLES HEEL is/has been/will always be - JERRY

Yes, of course he can. He is one of the best in the league.

After 3+ pages it's probably been said but if Dak goes down for any more than 2-3 games the team is toast anyway. But if the run game is strong and either Sam or Joe can just keep the ship afloat for a couple favorable matchups, we could be okay. I'd trust Sam first.

Besides, who else is out there to sign? You wanna trade for someone? Not many established backups out there, either.
...Minshew?? ...Maybe...??

Our Achiiles heel is Jerry.

And also, how are we going to sack the other teams' QBs this year?
Yes Jerry has been the Achilles heel and the reason we never mlk deep playoff runs. You can only go so far with a figurehead hc with no authority.

You reigh in Joe Milton and I think you could be competitive and win a couple games in a pinch. Most of the times he has played I think they told him to go out there and sling it.
Milton couldn’t win a game in the spring league. He is still a Cowboy because Jerry doesn’t admit mistakes. Instead, we are stuck with players like Milton who won’t be in the NFL much longer.

If we are relying on our backup, the season is already over. Championship run only works with Dak with this team. Even if we'd signed a Mac Jones, it’s all Dak or bust.
Tell that to the Eagles and their first Super Bowl win.

Exactly right. And he doesn't even wait in between. He went from having Lance way too long, right to Milton.
No, only Jerry pays these fringe players and coaches ,who no other team wants, far too long. He simply can't/won't admit that he made a mistake, you could not be more right.

It's the same thing year after year, isn't it?

The Chiefs signed Gardner Minshew, a proven QB with 47 NFL starts, to back up Mahomes in case he went down. Even with Minshew, they didn’t make the playoffs when Mahomes was injured.

So who exactly did you want the Cowboys to sign as insurance for Dak? There wasn’t anyone available who was going to step in and lead this team to wins deep into the playoffs.

If Dak goes down, the Cowboys’ season is probably over anyway. At that point, take the higher draft pick next April and move on.
Just another bash Jones thread, in disguise

we were shot with luck to have Bernie Kosar backing up Aikman. And many have thought he should have started the Super Bowl as Aikman was not all back yet.

But you simply are not going to be able to get that quality of backup now.
just cost way too much cap space.

I think howell can be a solid backup. A bus driver, maybe but it’s not like any backup is as good as the starter. There aren’t 32 starter quality QB’s so backups aren’t gonna be great
