Projection: Julius Wood will be on the 53

Remember we signed him in his rookie year but then cut him.

Curious to see if he's a better fit for Parker than Zimmer/any growth.
Can't recall if he was making positive waves back in 2024 camp.
Runs a 4.7 40

Kind of small.

You are making the correct statement. I did not take it personally. The 10 yard split did not equate to a 4.4 short shuttle which is more of a quickness measurable in football than the 40 yard dash.

However, your OP stated he was not quick. He is football quick but just not fast. I agree with you and stated he has LB speed. A slow LB speed.
Too slow.

I never understood all the #BellHate on here.

4.41 40.
I'm not sure why fans turned against him. I think he was misused after Quinn left. DCs tried to turn him into a back-end/quarters safety and he's more of a box player who can cover in a window. He's a good tackler, when he's not asked to play full-time linebacker, and he's got solid underneath coverage skills. Where he gets in trouble is if the coaches ask him to turn and run with players down the field. Of course, a lot of safeties get in trouble trying to mirror receivers downfield.

I think we'll see him some at dime linebacker, with Downs in the slot and Thompson and Hooker playing back. When we are in nickel, I figure Overshown and Winters will be at linebacker, but Bell will come in in the dime unless both of them prove to be better in coverage than him. Or someone else steps up, like Barron did today with his three interceptions.

We are seeing reports from the fan in Dfw about the Camp he's having. I went and watched some of his reps. The kid is killin it guys. I know it's early, no exhibition games been played yet, but who else here thinks we need to keep a close eye on him? Could he press the cowboys to make a tough decision? If he can translate his camp reps to the games, we might have found a starter. That's right, I think he could start instead of Hooker. I also think this scheme will use a lot of 3 safety looks. He, the guy we got from Arizona, and Downs might be the combo we see. Hooker hasn't been very good. Thoughts on Wood?
We are very deep at safety. Don’t forget Downs will play safety as well. The better he does the better for us but the odds of him making the 53 are very very slim. The odds of him starting are astronomical. All Just my opinion of course, but….

Nah. 10 yard splits show plenty of quickness.

40s show functional speed.

Deep speed isnt even measured. And fast 40s dont necessarily translate to deep speed.

Shuttles and 3 cones are just as much about practicing them as they are about running them. One slip and your time is blown.

I once ran a 6.53 three cone. 4.59 forty. 36 inch vertical. At 195lbs. And Id consider myself waaay out of the ability the guys in the NFL have.

I have zero faith someone less athletic than me will ever play in the NFL.
The 10 yard split is taken from the 40 yard dash. The short shuttle and Cone drill have more football playing importance.

I also, did 40 yard dash and both drills . However, I was taught the difference by a couple of honored Cowboy professionals. The short shuttle and cone drill scouting measurables are why Everson Walls and Mike Downs went to camp as UDFA and became Pro Bowlers. They did not have outstanding 40 yard times but outstanding shuttle and cone times.

If Woods played in the 80s, he may have had a chance.

Didn’t he stand out last preseason? If this has been asked —my bad

Even still…

It is a deep safety room with considerable competition. Bell is the logical odd man out and early in his career here I liked him. Hooker is a pretty cerebral guy IMO and Parker likes that. Hooker will coach one day. To be honest I don't know any of the projected backups well enough to make a call on who is a better player in Parker's system.
When is the last time we could say that and have it actually be true and not from living in lack (as Voch Lombardi would say)? I forget who said it but I heard one analyst say that we could go long at safety and shorter at corner. I'm not sure that's great idea, but it's a theory floating around out there. We have Caleb, Tompson, P.J. Locke, Hooker, Julius Woods, Elijah Clark, and Marquese Bell. I don't know of any other safeties if we have them, so that makes 7. If we go long (6 maybe) that would leave Bell out in my opinion.

Dline: Quinnen W, Kennny Clark, Otito Ogbonia(?), Jonathan Bullard - 4
OLB: Reshaun Gary, Eze, Houston, Malachai Lawrence, Sam Williams, Samoan Dude - 6
ILB: Barham, Overshown, Winters, Barron - 4
CB: Bland, Revel, Cobie Durant, Caelon Carson, Devin Moore, Reddy Steward, Josh Butler - 7 realistic possibilities
Safety: Caleb, Tompson, P.J. Locke, Hooker, Julius Woods, Elijah Clark, and Marquese Bell. - 7

That's 28 people who have a realistic shot on the defense. That's flat out not gonna happen, so who gets cut? For me, I only see 3 easy cuts: Samoan Dude, Josh Butler, and Marquese Bell. The team has been high on Butler for the last few years but his injury history might come back to bite him. That leaves 4 more That have to be cut. I'm stumped and fans are gonna be upset no matter what.

Caelon Carson is on the edge of the bubble (I think he is out unless they see him as a special teams guy).

Tito O. I think makes the team simply because he is hella strong, an immovable middle of the line object and this is what CP wants (shut down the middle run game. This philosophy got Quinnen Williams a 5 year deal. His stat line is not much I do admit but Dallas pursued him because of his anchoring traits.

Liufau (Samoan dude????) is said to be having a good camp and is cut out for the OLB position(his physical traits) so that is an interesting take. The cut is between him, Williams and Houston. Whoever gets the ax is a PS guy. Do they keep 5 or 6?

Considering that last year's talent level was so poor they have gone out and increased the talent significantly. Cut-down day will be an interesting time fo sho !

You left off Overton, James. 2 guys who are most likely to make it. Land at OLB had a really nice scrimmage. Bridges is right in there with Carson and Butler at CB. Then theres Dunn and some other guys on the Dline.

Its a numbers game.

Offense 25
QB 2
WR 5
OL 10
TE 4
RB 4

Do you go with 3 QBs? 3TEs? 6 WRs. Only 9 OL?

Defense 25
DL 5
OLB 5
ILB 5
CB 6
Safety 4

DL - Q,Clark, O, Overton, Bullard
OLB - Gary, Eze, Law, Houston, Williams
ILB - O, Winters, Barham, James, Barron
CB - Revel, Bland, Durrant, Moore, Carson, Bridges
S - Downs, Thompson, Locke, Hooker

Who plays ST? Locke is the only Safety. Bridges? Not sure if Carson played them last year. Moore?
Barron and James, probably Barham as well.
Williams. Houston.
Bullard and Overton.

Clark played fairly well on ST. Bell? Woods?

Do you cut a Carson or Bridges for a Bell, Clarke or Woods?

Do you cut Hooker for one of those guys?

And they may opt for a 3rd QB or a 6th WR. Which means somebody from the defense is cut.

Woods will not be on this roster. Its quite possible that neither Bell or Clark are on it. Theres even a chance Hooker isnt on it.

Thanks for reminding me of Liufau's name. I couldn't remember it to save my life and I never thought of looking at the roster on the mother ship.

Thanks for pointing out those that I left off. Now we have to get rid of even more!!! I believe you are correct about LT Overton and James being on the squad, so I can't for the life of me see who goes??? Also ... supposedly their recently signed CB Speed has been turning heads. Good problem to have I guess.

Really hoping Jerry continues operating the way he has been this season when the time for the final roster spots begin. No way Bell should make this team seen nothing to indicate he should while Woods just like last time he was here is making plays.
