I spoke on this a while back, so I will play Devil's Advocate for the NFL's selections. Here are the Associated Press' Defensive Rookie of the Year winners by position since the last time a safety (Mark Carrier/Chicago Bears) won in 1990 (link):

Kinda easy to understand why the league's marketing department would run with the law of averages, no matter how highly touted Caleb Downs was coming out of college. Personally, I believe Downs will have a great chance of winning DROY if he has a similar first year to Carrier's.

I personally wish they wouldn’t, but I think Caleb has enough confidence, he doesn’t listen to the noise. He just goes out there and does what he has to do.
I think he would probably have to lead the league, in interceptions

Good context, but the player that's in position to make the biggest impact is probably Downs.

Fair or not, if the Dallas defense improves this year, Downs will likely get a lot of credit for it.

Delane and Bain would be the next two guys I'd look to as odds on favorites, IMO.

Regarding Edge; it's relatively weak EDGE class, which gives Downs a boost.

Bailey is the best EDGE IMO, but he plays for the Jets.
Reese will be Will LB to start the season, I believe.
Faulk is raw

And then you have Bain and Messidor. Both guys can play and are probably the most polished and should be on playoff contenders.

We'll really know when the season starts, but I just don't see anyone running away with it as of now.

Whether we like it or not, thanks to Jerry's PT Barnum Abilities, the distinction between "Cowboys circles" and "NFL circles" is almost non existent.

If it was Venn Diagram, the overlap would be a near perfect circle.

Downs is getting a media boost already.

It should not surprise anyone if-and-when NFL.com starts shuffling viable candidates in all award categories as the season progresses. Caleb Downs may be listed by them for DROY before too long.
