Preseason Game 2 reactions (and overreactions)

I didnt see the game...and it's good to hear you think Malik Davis secure #2RB position. But is Malik Davis a true #2 RB that can step up and take the hits and stay healthy if Williams goes down... Just curious if you think the Cowboys are in the trade market for a RB#2 or not....Personally, I think Malik Davis is a good #3 as I view RB#2 as someone that can step up for 17games if Williams get hurts.
Would most likely be a RB by committee situation because idk if Davis could give you 25 carries a night for an extended period of time, but 12-15 carries as the lead back? Yea I think Davis could do it no problem. Williams, Davis, and Blue would be my three backs as of right now. Mafah had a really good TD run but hes getting outplayed by Davis who is almost 30 pounds lighter showing more power in his runs when Mafah is supposed to be the big power back. Think he makes it to PS tho.

That's an impressive stat. I can see that the defence is improving, even if it's just depth pieces playing. But the depth pieces playing well should indicate that the starters are going to be good..... in theory lol. Should be fun to watch as the defence gets better.

Let's add Shotty and Defensive coaches to good list. This team just looks much better coached and prepared to play.

Definitely, the two preseason games have a mark of a coaching staff that actually have the team prepared. I know it's preseason and they're not actually doing full game plans and adjustments, but it's good to see that the team on all 3 phases know what they're doing.

One thing that sticks out to me, and yes, it is ONLY preseason:

This team just looks "clean". And by that I mean not just in the penalty department. Just that everything looks clean and smooth. Everyone knows the play call, offense and defense. Everyone knows what they are doing and where they should be going. Little to no miscommunication. No blown assignments. When the opponent makes a big play it's because they earned it, not because of a Cowboys mistake.

Let's hope this carries over to next month.

We need to look at trading some of our players-is there a market for them-I am thinking Howell and Mingo as a couple of possibilities. Won't get much but still welcome draft capital

I'm for this. And we could use one of the picks to get a rental at RT that plays well, sets us up to be able to draft a RT to replace Steele, and gets us a comp pick. Meanwhile, our last big hole would be filled, so the Cowboys would be legitimate contenders for once.

I've noticed that too. It's nice to see. And yes, hopefully it carries into February lol

True, but did they call that a fumble? My wife and I were talking about that. She said, that's not a fumble, the was tripped up and as soon as the ball or his arm touched the field, it should have been dead.
Maybe, but he was reaching out before he touched down (I believe) and probably shouldn't have taken the chance, IMO.
Maybe he only did it because it's preseason, but I hope Coach talks to him about it.

I don't think he's bad by any means, but I don't think he's special.

Also, that fumbling problem he has drags down an average running back into below average.
It will be interesting to see how the RB position shakes out. Davis has clearly made his case as the #2 back behind Javonte Williams.

The final spot will probably be decided between Blue, Mafah and Israel Abanikanda based on their ability to contribute on STs. It has been interesting to see Mafah and Blue returning kicks. Of those three, Mafah seems most in danger to me.

The Cowboys clearly want Blue and his speed to be a part of this team. But it may not be enough to keep him. He’s looked good in moments, but when reviewing PS game performances, context is important. Like us, our opponents have mostly played backups and guys who will never play a regular season down in the NFL.

Like Blue, Abanikanda is a 5th round pick (drafted by the jets in ‘23) who has struggled to prove he belongs. Right now Mafah, Blue, and Abanikanda are fighting for either RB #3 or a practice squad spot.

He has to be given a roster spot.

You absolutely cannot get rid of Joe Milton. His ceiling is as high as they come and he keeps improving.

Hes too valuable to cut for nothing.

Agreed, I think he's a lock for the 2 spot imo. I think they might do well to give Howell the entirety of game 3 to evaluate him a bit further.

If Joe Milton develops accuracy like hes doing now, along with the natural progression of reading defenses he’ll be starting somewhere

Either here if he stays until Dak retires (doubtful) or he elevates to where we can get a 2nd round pick

If the team has a good first month of the season the FO could invest in a player thinking we have something going, I thought a LB would be a need but after watching Barham I'm more inclined to look for OL help/depht or even CB. Passrush is always a need but I'm afraid the cost is too high.

I think OT would be the best place to get a rental. I think we're okay on pass rush, and I trust Parker for DBs
