What we cannot see yet

ha. I cannot say how often I have watched games, matches, bouts, races, etc., during my life, where greater talent was bested by lesser talent with more grit. Certainly, greater talent provides the better advantage, but it is never a guarantee for victory unless greater talent meets and exceeds whatever the opponent throws at it.

Otherwise, the word 'upset' would not exist in competition. Hey. Sports.
Hold it. Lesser talent is still talent.

Mayweather might be the ungrittiest boxer I've ever seen.

Mostly, the better talent wins.

Wait. Are you stating greater talent always wins? Just want to make certain what you saying exactly.

You said this last year too.

Do you have a notes app with everything to copy and paste on here?

Just asking.

And before you get all bothered by my comment.

The Cowboys have 0 currency with me until they prove it on the field.

Not in training camp, not in OTAs, on the field.

That is their fault. .

Not mine.
Yeah, it's difficult for me. I don't take sides in this ridiculous homer vs hater kindergarten crapp thingie, I only assess what I see.

Too many solid comments to quote but as to talent and coaching look no further than last season with the ascension of the Bears and Patriots when a boss HC arrived.

And if coaching does matter this much what does it say that we have an unproven, inexperienced HC here?

I'm not saying that he can't be an effective HC but the question should be why was he hired when Vrabel and Ben Johnson weren't even interviewed?

Only our "GM" can answer that question.
I bet Vrabel and maybe Johnson could answer as well.

Seems to me Vrabel is an NO NONSENSE kind of guy.

Here is the post in question.

Talent is the #1 factor. W/o out talent, none of the other factors matter.

Now, coaching is needed to pull that talent together, no doubt.

Is Mahomes a leader? Then why did he only win 6 games last season?
One thing leadership has trouble overcoming is injury.
When talented players get injured they need medical care and healing time not something leadership can fix

Yes, that is a factor. Which lessens their talent.

Look up "mostly".
I got the "mostly". Your original reply was "Talent. Much more important than grit. And it's not close. And we just added a ton of it." You attached that to what I said, which was, "Grit has been missing from this franchise since the Parcells' days. It will be outstanding if the amassed talent and coaching this season's assembled team can be combined with actual, every game, no exception, grit. That would be awesome to say the least."

My comment combined the necessity of talent and grit. Yours did not and inferred talent was pretty much all that a team needs. I disagree. So even though you did add 'mostly' I was curious if you meant 'mostly'. You did. We disagree about the importance of variables needed for success, but I understand clearly where you are coming from. Thanks.

On some levels that might be successful but at professional level. Talent trumps all. It’s why Jimmy went 1-15 without it. And Landry 0-11-1.

Great leadership has an eye for talent with building skills and then can optimize but without talent is limited . I’m not sure a band is a good analogy for a professional sports team especially NFL. On Amateur level perhaps .

Hard work only goes so far. Someone with far more talent or brains who uses it in certain fields will surpass . That said we need the lunch pale types to help carry the load cause the most talented and gifted don’t always work the hardest cause it comes easier to them.
So let's talk about Milton. "raw" they said. "Talented" they said. But unrefined. Loose canon. Relying TOO much on just talent...maybe?

So hard work he went, apparently.

So it's possible EVERYONE is right? You need a good combination of ALL of it to succeed. And I think those "winners" have various levels of them.

You just beat me to it!

To add, it also blatantly screams that there is a huge change in the air.
Definitely a change going on

I feel as though the culture is trending in a positive way because of shotty ability to communicate with the players.

I feel at this point we have a very competitive roster.

Now it's a big ask for an unproven coaching staff but they have to step up and pull this whole thing together for us to be successful.

They are not getting any breaks in the schedule either.

The coaching staff leadership is what is going to make or break this team this year adequate talent is there.

But if it's another year where the clock management is screwed and we are the most penalized team in the NFL
And we are consistently being out coached by guys who have been in and won Super bowls in our division the talent will again be wasted

If you truly focus on patterns, then you are aware that the pattern has changed.
Patterns are developed in game time situations and especially towards the end of the season. Like I said, we've been the paper champions prior to starting the season many times in the past. The effectiveness of any team is shaped by its leadership (Jerry and Stephen). When unhealthy behaviors or a negative culture is deeply embedded at the leadership level, the strengths of individual players and coaches can be overshadowed until those foundational issues are addressed. One or two years does not make a pattern at this level.

I think we've bench raced this thing pretty hard

But I'm going to go out on the limb and say we can all agree there are quite a few factors involved in having a successful football team.

Front office, coaching, talent, leadership, grit, culture, locker room chemistry, health and luck.

What's important is how many of these intangibles do we have going for us.

Well compared to last year I think the front office the effort has been far superior.
Coaching I believe we have a better defensive coach then we had last year and our head coach seems to be able to relate very well to the players with good communication

Talent I believe this roster is more than adequate to make the playoffs.

Leadership the addition of von Miller has to help other than that not a lot of Super bowl experience or individuals known to do their best in big moments sorry but that's the way it is.

Culture definitely trending in a positive way getting rid of the paycheck collectors contract negotiators business decision makers and employing football players.

Grit seems like after we got rid of the stat collecting business decision makers we got a little grittier. But now we didn't add Jack youngblood and Ronnie lott

Locker room chemistry seems very good specially after Pete's breakdown let's just see if we can keep CD lamb from screwing it up by messing with Vons baby mama.

Health seems good so far and luck is what it is.

My projection if the coaching staff steps up manages the clock make sure we're not the most penalized team in the NFL and can out coach the guy across from them we can win a playoff game maybe two

KSK also added in another post that great coaching, chemistry, etc can add to the talent.

I’d add that the basis is talent. Great leadership and coaches amass talent and can optimize. But we’ve seen how great coaches without talent are limited .

And why it’s all driven by talent however you want to narrate. Yes , need great leadership to assemble and then coordinate. But the more talent the more likelihood for success.

I think we underestimate how the Culture of Jerry impacts the Cowboys, something else that is "hard to see" at times. JJ can derail a talented team, given his style of ownership/management. It's a real challenge for the players to tune out all the noise from fans, pundits and past gruntled players...so they stay focused on the task at hand over 17+ weeks. Easier said than done.

So, I don't care how much things have changed at the player and coaching levels, the constant is Jerry at the top....and that comes with its own obstacles for players and coaches. As we have seen over the years, this obstacle is hard to overcome. The pressure, stress and tension can be a bit much.

And the more success the Cowboys have this season (let's say they get off to a fast start, like 8-2 or something), and JJ keeps gleefully fielding all those questions, and the pundits keep saying that the Cowboys seem to be "Superbowl bound if they can just stay healthy", the weight of it all can be too much to handle.

The coaching staff, they have a real challenge in front of them, all season long...let's see how they handle it from week to week.

The Cowboys are a perfect example after Jimmy left how poor leadership can skew great talent and also how great talent can overcome poor leadership . Both examples wrapped up into one.

QB is very difficult to analyze. So many contributing factors surrounding him that need to bounce right.

Raw talent isn’t enough sometimes . Mental errors at QB are much more critical than other positions.

We’ve seen great talents at QB struggle without a strong supporting cast.
