TRADED Cowboys trade for OT Broderick Jones

He had a very major surgery less than a year ago to fuse his spine

Three months of complete neck immobility.

Four months of rehab

He participated in camp but his strength and overall conditioning was bad. He’s not regained his weight yet either

Before the injury, e was a bit of a Guyton type project for the Steelers and still has mechanical and technical issues, just like Guyton.

He seems like a good dude but this is a major injury red flag

Honestly, I don’t know why they did this.

If anything we need a reliable backup swing. Not a project coming off an injury.

Major neck surgery? A spinal fusion? That sounds like an insanely risky thing to gamble on.

To me, whether this trade ends up being worth it will largely come down to where their fourth-round pick and our third-round pick fall in the pecking order of next year’s draft.

Based on everything I’ve read, this cat doesn’t sound remotely ready to play meaningful snaps or contribute this year.
I’m trying to think of all the players who have had spinal fusion and fully recovered.

I know for the cowboys the last two I remember are Damone Clark and LVE. And neither one of them was the same player after the surgery.

Well, if nothing else, it’s another sign that we are going for it this year. Unfortunately he’s not ready to play yet.

We’ll see what he’s like at the bye

Can't they stash him IR and bring him back later in the season?

That way they can keep another player in the 53 in the meantime?

Teams aren't giving up any tackles that they want starting. Jones was the best Dallas was going to get short of giving up a 1st or 2nd, which would have been truly insane.

Swapping a 3rd for a 4th and Jones is as good a deal they were going to get. And Jones has started 38 games.

Cowboys received:- George Pickens- Broderick Jones- 2027 4th
Steelers received:- 2026 3rd- 2027 3rd- 2027 5th. The Steelers, as noted, also sent and then got back their own 2027 6th, fwiw.

I’m not advocating for trading for a starter. Just saying. I don’t like giving up these picks for an injured project guy.

Run down on Broderick Jones for Dallas people:

- Steelers have played / started him at RT and LT over his career, 38 starts. Better at LT than RT for sure.

- Has looked rough this preseason. Played both sides. Coming off neck surgery and still trying to get back to ideal playing weight

- Jolly guy. He is a great locker room vibes guy who is always happy around the facility. Loved by teammates.

- Athletic player. Has some bad habits (waist-bending, crossing feet, wide hands, etc.) that get him into trouble. Good demeanor in the run game.

- Was at best the swing tackle for the Steelers.

I dunno about this. Chronically injured--serious injuries. He's had spinal fusion surgery. Last year of his contract.

I think the Cowboys would have been better off picking up someone off the wire.
That’s definitely the risk. Steelers didn’t want to take the risk of his recovery while the Cowboys did
