TRADED Cowboys trade for OT Broderick Jones

Since when is the gunner position a thing we care about here? We've literally never talked about it on this board dating back as long as I've been here (and all other Cowboys forums before that). In fact, this board has been pretty consistent in wanting to eliminate ST-only players like CJ Goodwin.

What is with this sudden rush to protect a guy who hasn't make a difference on gameday--ever?

Thing is, he’s actually going to be active and play ST’s well and can come in as a WR5 block well and play in a pinch. He actually has traits that the others don’t in that room with his ST & blocking ability.

Camden Brown would be inactive each week outside of injury. You keep the guy who’s actually going to play over the guy who won’t.

Yes I’d like that 4th back and Mingo has been underwhelming but the staff likes his ST’s ability and blocking physicality. That’s actual value over guy in street clothes who just plays WR worse than the starters.

Same with Turp. Have all the gripes you want but there’s a reason he didn’t play a single snap this preseason. He bring traits the others don’t have with his speed quickness and return ability. You’re not going to cut or trade the versatility in your WR room for a UDFA that doesn’t have any discernible or differentiating traits that make him valuable.

It’s fine to have opinions, but if you’re ignoring what you’re being told and showed by the team then you’re just wishing. It’s quite obvious Mingo and Turpin are valued by the coaches and they will likely both be on this team for obvious reasons. We need to be realistic about how front offices operate and how rosters are constructed. UDFA fringe WR’s usually get cut and brought to PS, they don’t often make active rosters just to stand around in street clothes.

It’s possible they keep Brown over Mingo, but it’s not typically how these things go.

For me this sounds like Guyton 2.0, doesn’t it? Independent of him being a left or right tackle it hasn’t klicked yet for him, so that he translates his excellent physical profile to on court performance.

It's a pretty typical Cowboys trade, believing that their staff can develop a player that another staff couldn't.

The only difference is that the team doesn't absolutely have to hit on Broderick Jones. Steele is the starting RT, and flaws and all, he was the starting RT when we had one of the top offenses in the league last year. We'd like to improve the position, and this appears to be an attempt to do that, but if it fails, it isn't the end of the world like trades for Murray and Elam were last year. We knew we had to start those players despite the fact they washed out with the teams they were on, and we traded for them anyway with no kind of plan for if they failed.

Agreed though I don't think Jones is that level bad.

And we didn't trade for him without a parachute. Now, Steele is a parachute with a lot of holes in it, but he still can get you to the ground with only a broken leg or two.

He is not a bust. He has 38 starts I believe and was their starting LT before neck injury and spinal fusion surgery. While active in camp, he is still trying to regain weight and strength. It will take time, but he may be our best option at swing tackle right now due to his experience, and as he works himself back into top shelf, he may provide great competition at RT.

He kinda is…

They could work out an extension now, though. He has a $1.5 million base this year, so if the team were to bump up that base and give him step raises over the next few years. It depends if they want to guarantee him money to be the swing tackle because that would probably be the only way he'd sign.

Flipping a 3rd for a 4th and getting a former 1st round tackle is not a bad deal in my opinion.

Even if Jones doesn't start I feel a lot better about depth now. Shelton and Thomas? They ain't it.

Cowboys are probably hoping he is a contributor this season, and may be a cheaper long term option at OT after this season if we can extend him on the cheap or get a comp pick out of him if he plays this year then departs. That lowers the acquisition cost.

After watching this video....makes me think maybe the Cowboys are doing this deal as insurance for left tackle....and admitting that Shelton was a mistake.

I was thinking maybe its more to replace Nate Thomas. He did play both tackle postions at Pittsburgh. So he be swing tackle then if he develops maybe starting RT down the line.
