TRADED Cowboys trade for OT Broderick Jones

Look, I am thrilled with our offseason. I think we are going to do well this year. But I hate sending a premium draft pick for a player that has failed and is coming off a major injury. It's silly that hurts your feelings.

Want to improve the team? Package that premium pick with another and go get a difference maker. Not a swing tackle that might be the same player you're trying to replace.

They have done a great job of improving the current team.

Same. We're not actually asking him to start, but we're hoping that he can prove worthy of it and improve the RT spot. I don't think it's a bad risk. Even though everyone wants to replace Steele, if we didn't have him, I probably wouldn't like this move, but he is a starting NFL tackle. He has his struggles that make him less than ideal, but he holds up on most downs. He's just going to get beat in the pass rush a few times per game.

cmon dude, the draft is littered with HOF players drafted in the 4th and later. Look at how easy it is:

• Terrell Davis (RB – 6th Round, Pick 196 – 1995): Super Bowl MVP and 2,000-yard rusher who anchored the Denver Broncos' back-to-back championship runs.
• Shannon Sharpe (TE – 7th Round, Pick 192 – 1990): Redefined the tight end position with three Super Bowl rings and eight Pro Bowl nods.
• Cris Carter (WR – 4th Round, Supplemental Draft – 1987): Finished his career with 130 touchdown receptions and eight Pro Bowl selections.
• Steve Largent (WR – 4th Round, Pick 117 – 1976): Held all major NFL receiving records at the time of his retirement.

A project who had spinal fusion, isn’t in game shape, and is a free agent in six months.

This just looks like a move that doesn’t help the team this year and isn’t set up to help in the future either

He is depth that projects to be better than the current depth on the roster.

Price seems slightly steep though. I mean, Pickens was only a third. I’ll wait for the people who know what they are talking about to chime in.

Valuewise, he cost us less than Pickens because we get a fourth-round pick back in return. We essentially get Jones and a pick (fourth) for two picks (third and sixth).

We can cherrypick all day, but it's less than 50 percent of fourth-rounders that hit in this league. I recently show Dallas' hit rate for that round over the last 10 years and it was pretty much right at 50 percent.

It's the outliers like the ones you mention here that get fans excited, but the reality is less exciting.

He was incredible at Georgia at RT. (Pittsburgh used him at LT.) Let's let him heal and try him there.

I think they are just looking at him as better depth than what we have with hopes that he can become more than that because of his pedigree. I assume he will be the swing tackle starting out. If Steele struggles, then he may get a shot at the starting job at some point. If he proves worthy of it, then we got a good deal. If he doesn't, then either we re-sign him for cheap as the swing tackle or we call it a swing and a miss.

I don't mind taking this swing knowing that we need to improve right tackle BUT we don't have to absolutely improve right tackle. It's different than say trading for Kenneth Murray Jr. when we absolutely had to have a starting middle linebacker.

likely better than the two backup tackles we got, but I think he scored worse than Steele last season. We have a bad track record with these kind of players though…..underperforming 1sts coming here and being worse than they were in their first stop lol. I think we had 3 last season with Elam, the DE from the saints, and Murray.

We gave

• A third round pick
• A sixth round pick

We got

• A fourth round pick
• A fourth year project who would have been cut tomorrow if not for fear of the PR from failing on a first round pick
• Who had spinal fusion less than a year ago and isn’t in game shape because he’s still recovering
• Is an unrestricted free agent in six months

I’m trying to find a way to make this make sense

If he were simply an underperforming project that the Steelers gave up on, with a couple of years left, that would have been worth it.

Could be. He needs a lot of work on strength and technique, so a lot depends on how bad he wants it.
