I'm seeing this trade as a somewhat desperate attempt to take a chance on a physically impaired OT, who is likely a few months away from a good recovery of his physical well-being. Whether or not he's able to be a positive influence upon this OL remains to be seen. Time will tell.

Let's hope that he's able to recover fully from his spinal injury and the fused vertebrae involved. His career certainly hangs in the balance of whatever comes. He's unlikely to be a quick solution to this team's OL difficulties. Patience will be required. The Steelers lost theirs.

It is. He flipped sides late in his rookie year, struggled at RT in 2024, then he flipped back to LT last year.

His worst performances were on the right side two years ago. He had struggles last year too but flashed before his week 12 injury.

The difference between a 3 and 4 is huge. It may not seem like much right now, but it will when it's day 2 of the draft next April, and we're sitting around waiting for Saturday.

Some quick things I have read about Jones:

-Strengths: Plus athtlete. Has the quick feet and movement skills needed. Good power and displays a nasty temperment in the running game. Aware in pass pro and keeps looking for targets to block. Fits well in zone heavy schemes (which the Cowboys run) because he can kick out and block defenders on the second level with ease.

-Weaknesses: Poor technique. Lets defenders into his body and does not use his arm length to latch onto and steer pass rushers. Footwork in pass protection can get sloppy and he does not always play with a solid base. Does not consistently finish his blocks and will give up on plays when he feels like his job was done. Neck injury in December.

-Overall: Jones was raw when drafted and has flashed considerable ability, but his first three seasons were marred by inconsistent play and injuries. The Steelers did him no favors by flipping him from right to left tackle, which might have contributed to his stunted development.

However, he would rebound and continue to improve, allowing only 3 sacks total from Week 2 to Week 10. On November 29, 2025, Jones was placed on injured reserve after suffering a neck injury in Week 12 against the Chicago Bears.[21] The next day, it was announced that he would miss the remainder of the season due to the injury

Let's do some assuming
We gave up a third and a six and were returned a fourth and a player. Let's assume we have a good season and are slated to pick in the mid to late twenties (32, right), and the Steelers have another mediocre season with a new head coach and scheme and are slated just outside the top ten to middle teens. So, basically, we are dropping 12 to maybe 20 spots in a loaded draft
Of course, the season has to play out. But let's give it a whole season for Adames and Riley to work with Jones to get his technique straightened out. If Jones doesn't show signs of improvement, then let him walk in FA. The cost isn't much to take a flier on him and if he earns a new contract from the Cowboys, then that too won't break the bank.
The Steelers were the ones who invested the capitol in the player and saw him as a first-round talent, the cowboys are only investing in the player by dropping a few picks and giving up a sixth as sweetener. All the Cowboys are looking for is Jones to become average at best, to be better than Steele as the season goes on.
Jones' ability to play both sides allows the Cowboys to only have to carry nine OL and add Shelton to PS. Thomas is out. Have to give the Cowboys some credit by being active about the OT problem instead of just sitting on their hands by saying, "Well, we feel good about our OT situation and the so called players just need to step it up and play better".
It's not like OT's are hanging on a tree just waiting to be picked.

This was a typical Jones move: make a splash to get attention; secondarily, to actually do something positive.

This absolutely shows they have little confidence in their tackle room. With good reason. So far the only positive sign this preseason has been that Guyton might be finally taking a big step forward. Steele has looked bad; and Thomas and Shelton worse.

Based on his career numbers and advantage in experience, Jones should be an upgrade over both Shelton and Thomas. Whether or not he'd be better than Guyton or Steele remains to be seen.

Notice we say "should be an uptrade" because Jones is not a lock to have success in Dallas given what we've seen out of him during his careeer.


Through three seasons and 1,378 pass-blocking snaps, Jones has given up 95 pressures and 20 sacks and has Pro Football Focus pass-blocking grades of 59 or lower in each.


He hasn't been a great run-blocker, either, as Jones' best mark there is a 64.2, which came in 2024.


In 11 games last season, Jones surrendered 23 pressures and six sacks and was graded with a 59 in pass protection and a career-low 50.6 in run-blocking. Jones did not look to be improving this preseason, either, as he allowed five pressures, three sacks and posted similar PFF grades in three contests.

Jones is no doubt a worthwhile addition when you consider the shaky situation in Dallas, but he's anything but guaranteed to be the reliable swing tackle the Cowboys need, and we didn't love what Dallas gave up for him, either.

LT is the most important position on the OL. Period.

Smith would not be “average.” You are pulling that idea out of your butt. No one knows how good he will be. But he was drafted to play that position to begin with, or at least that was a possibility.

Guyton will likely be an upgrade over Steele in pass blocking. He played the position in college and has the athleticism to succeed. He may not be a mauler, but he won’t be a liability like Steele either.

Finally, it is easier to replace a LG than a LT. There will be a dropoff from Smith to Bass, but the stability at LT alone will make it worth it in terms of overall OL efficiency.

Moving Smith is not “ideal”. But it is clear none of the FO plans regarding OT development have materialized. How many games are you willing to sacrifice this season in order to come to this realization:

Smith is our best OT and we need him to stabilize the most important position on the OL

It's the most important position. So why would you move somebody who's skillset translates to guard into that position. Especially one who has all pro potential at guard.
Guyton played RT in college because the QB was left handed.
He hasn't been able to adjust to the physical aspects on the left side in this league. He eoullast a month on the Right.
Thats why every scouting department in the league projected him to LT. Hes either a LT or he's selling used cars!

Great post. I think we see the raw sack numbers allowed and many fans think he's bad. But I think they came in bunches. He wasn't a turnstile out there all season long and there were some high level performances.

What is weird is that he never worked with Duke Manyweather in the offseason but some of his teammates like Frazier have.
