Practice Squad Joe Milton Signed to Practice Squad

Opinion only….

Word was reported that a few teams inquired into Cowboys QB situation prior to releasing Joe. Some read into that that they were inquiring about trading for Joe. I don’t think so. It has been reported that several teams wanted to sign Sam, but he agreed with Dallas.

I believe the teams that inquired a couple days ago hoped we were keeping Joe and wanted to trade for Sam. Waiting to try and claim him was risky as he would likely be a better backup with his starting experience than what many currently have.

No one was interested in Milton when they knew the Cowboys were not dealing Howell. This is supported by the fact that all 31 could have claimed him as their backup or even third string QB at no cost, but they didn’t. It was also reported that Dallas didn’t reach back out to anyone when releasing Milton. Some argue that was dumb not to try and get a draft pick. I believe Dallas had no reason to reach out to the teams that contacted them about a QB because they already knew those teams wanted Sam, not Joe. This is also supported by Milton never being claimed.

The Cowboys released Joe Milton because they didn’t really view losing him as a loss, keeping Carson and Speed instead. I’m sure they are happy to have their PS QB be someone they already know and have worked with as opposed to a stranger, but other than that having him was clearly no priority.
This makes a ton of sense. The Cowboys said all the right things about how "close" Howell and Milton were. But all we saw were preseason games against vanilla defenses. We don't see how Milton practices. We don't see how he works behind the scenes. We don't know how much of a grasp he has of the playbook. Remember, no team runs "their stuff" in exhibition games.

I am starting to think Howell just won the backup spot outright. If Milton was "right there" the Cowboys would not have taken the gamble they did.

That makes zero sense. And no one ever said teams inquired about Joe specifically, only that they checked on a QB. If another team was willing to give up anything to trade for Milton, 1) Dallas would have been stupid to waive him the next day instead of taking whatever was offered. 2) Why would any team offer anything for Milton but then fail to claim him the next day for free.

This scenario is 100 percent illogical.
You're right. Never considered the possibility teams were actually trying to get Howell instead.

Milton still cannot read even the vanilla defenses of preseason. His athleticism allowed him to avoid a few sacks and make some plays. But that is not how the offense is supposed to run and is not sustainable. He also showed that he still can miss the easy throws and airmail over the middle throws. He looked good compared to last season when he was completely inept, but too much has been put into this team to put it in his hands if Dak goes down. Howell’s style is similar to Dak’s. He can read the defense, see the blitz, and pass from the pocket. He is the best choice to keep the offense in some level of consistency. I hope Milton continues to develop, but I wasn’t going to lose any sleep over someone else signing him. Fans here value him more than 31 other teams, including some carrying 3-4 QBs on their 53 currently. They could have dropped the worst QB on their roster to put Milton on as their third stringer, but no one did. I’m sure it was sobering for Milton, but it is what it is.
To be fair to Milton, he never really had to read a defense until he got to the NFL. Ran the spread offense at Tennessee with pre-determined reads. And when the play had to be changed he just got a signal from the coaches on the sideline to switch it. All he had to do was hit whoever was open.

His learning curve was steep coming in. He's actually gotten far, all things considered.

The Cowboys should start Joe in the NY game, then, after the Giants are tired, put in Dak to finish off the game.

Lol.

You have been working overtime the past few days defending the team.

Teams ALWAYS trade a player for a pick if they can, instead of releasing them. Always.

The reason Milton is on the PS is because nobody wanted to give up a pick for him. End of story.
Lol, you are wrong.

Yeah, by the time he's 40 things will click!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lol. No. No I am not wrong.

A team will ALWAYS trade a player before releasing them if they can.
It’s not rocket science.
They wanted him back. They have done this before with a qb. Have you forgot?

Spot on, hard to gauge what happened each practice. Maybe Milton made more splash plays, but more mistakes too, while Howell was more consistent. If you need a backup QB for a couple games to steer the ship, coaches probably prefer the more consistent player, which I venture to guess is why he won the job. 60 yard bomb highlights are great to watch, but hitting the short and intermediate routes regularly probably matter more.

Still glad to retain Milton on the PS though!

You are living in a fantasy world.

Here is the answer from Google AI:

QUESTION: Have the Dallas Cowboys ever released a qb even when they could have traded him?

ANSWER:
No NFL team—including the Dallas Cowboys—releases a quarterback when a trade is actually available, because front offices will always choose to get a draft pick rather than letting a player go for nothing.

The Joe Milton Situation
When the Cowboys waived quarterback Joe Milton III after roster cuts, analysts and radio hosts discussed whether Dallas could have traded him instead.
    • No Offers: Football insiders reported that Dallas tried to find a trade partner or gauge interest, but there were simply no trade offers available.
    • The Business Side: If another team had offered even a late-round draft pick, the Cowboys would have accepted it.
    • The Result: Because no team was willing to trade for him, the Cowboys chose to release him and later attempt to bring him back to the practice squad.
In short, a release almost always means no other team wanted to give up an asset via trade.

They really didn't want to lose him. That's why he is back.

He’s on the PS.

We need a QB3 on the 53 for game day.

Why even bring him back?
In case there's an injury? Even if he's not brought up and taken to games, if we lose a QB then we need a backup.

Lol.

No. He is back because noone was willing to trade for him, and none of the 31 teams wanted to sign him to their active roster.

So, you are saying that Schotty was lying yesterday.

Damn...I thought people said they released him so Dak wouldn't feel threatened? So now is Dak back threatened again? The SAga continues.....lol

The whole "released him so Dak wouldn't feel threatened" thing was one of the dumbest things I have ever heard or read. What top 5 to top 7 player at their position would be threatened by a backup who isn't as seasoned or as good as he is.

That makes zero sense.....
